Houston roads are pure crap potholes and then stretches of completely straight and smooth freeways. I know for sure I cannot get a sporty coupe again or even a saloon because I will continue to jack up wheels and undercarriage on the mean streets of Highland Village.

What about a Range Rover with adjustable suspension to navigate both? Anyone have one? I only know they are supposed to be good at offroading, do they soak up horribly shoddy roadwork? How well can they transform into comfortable freeway cruisers?

Not a fan of the Range Rover for highway cruising. I have the Classic and an old Land Cruiser in Pakistan, and its terrains suits them better. If you want an SUV and that floaty feel, I recommend the Escalade and Lexus LX. My family has owned a couple over the years and they love these two. They have plenty of room to stretch out and good luxury when you're stuck in traffic between 610 and 59 South near the Galleria. ;)

I had 3 SUV's before I bought my current car. Never again, at least not living in Houston. I don't care if it costs me an arm in gas, next vehicle I get is going to be an SUV or pickup.

I'm a geology student, and what I've come to learn is that no matter how many pot-holes fixed, or roads re-paved...this city is built on clay, and minus the freeways the roads will always be deteriorating.

I'd go with something along the lines of an International CXT/RXT/XLT or maybe an old Lambo LM002.

You deal with it. You learn to slow down, etc. My car is 6 inches off the ground. I don't have any issues.

Agreed here. Slow down when you are in areas where it is bad and scan the road in front of you for stuff you don't want to drive over. You also start to learn where the bad spot and its not a big deal. Not that big of a deal and not worth driving an SUV if you prefer a sport/luxury sedan or coupe.
