The problem with your mindset about it, though, is that the Rockets shouldn't have to cater to Lin. It doesn't matter what's going on behind closed doors. Lin owes it to the Rockets to not let that stuff affect his play, not the other way around.

Do you want to give guys like Kwame Brown another chance because he couldn't get confidence? The bottom line is that if the player isn't producing on the court, they're going to replace him with someone who is.

Well, we have seen some data with who "should" starts. I like to see more advanced data on our most effective closers. Our biggest problems prior to Bev injury was we were close to last in the 4Q (I think it was around -9). That needs to be solved.

What is wrong with you? I became a Rockets fan since Yao came to Houston.

The thing is I don't have the privilege to open threads. All can I do is to rely to others. So what do you expect?

I like both Lin and Beverly, and I tend to favor Beverly starting with Lin getting close to 30 mpg at the 1 and the 2, BUT... from what I gleaned from this article, it does not take into consideration the fact that Lin never got the chance to play with Beverly off the bench (as was the case towards the end of last season as Lin was starting to get in stride). The entire guard rotation was thinner with Beverly out, and it has looked to me like Beverly has struggled to run point full time when Lin has been out, too.

So this is not an entirely fair analysis.

... I'm sure someone has pointed this out by now, though...

Interesting point I wonder if what was the affect of this if there was a significant effect at all...

Arguing that we don't know what is going on behind closed doors, followed by arguing that McHale is not helping is a bit disonant.

Of course it matters what is going on behind closed doors. And yes, the Rockets should cater to Lin. They have a multimillion dollar investement in him. They shouldn't cater to him to the detriment of the team, but if, for example, he nets an extra two points per game if every coach comes over and says "good job" when he comes out, they should bloody well do that.

That's the job of the management and coaches. If they aren't doing the best they can to get the best performance out of all their players then they should be replaced with people who do.

[Note that "cater to" and "playing time" are not the same thing.]

To those who think Lin should be starting: Yep, Clutch is right and you're wrong. Mind you, this doesn't necessarily mean that Beverley is a better player than Lin in a vacuum. IMO Lin is objectively the better player, but with Harden and Parsons locked into our starting lineup Beverley is the better player.

To those who think Lin should be traded ASAP: Nope. Our bench is horrible, and you want to take away the only player who can create offense and score reliably? And who exactly are you going to trade him for? If our front office couldn't get good value in exchange for Asik thanks to his awful contract, we're not getting anything in exchange for Lin.

Wow at people who never saw Lowry in a rockets uni try to dig up numbers to prove something that isn't true. I hate Lowry btw , the dude left on a terrible note and had a rotten attitude. All the things hat Lin can't do, the traits required of a starting pg in this league, Lowry could do. His jumper was even worse than Lins at a point but he played smart. Lin is so bipolar that he looks like a fringe NBA player every 2-3 games. It's those fundamentals of passing and keeping your dribble that Lin has trouble with. You won't see that in an stat but is clear as day to anybody that watches him play.

"Cater" - To be particularly attentive or solicitous
    - To attend to the wants or needs of

Since they also have a multi million dollar investment on Asik, does that mean we have to cater to his needs? Management should not cater to anybody specific.

You went on to say that it is important to know what is happening behind closed doors and yet you implied that management does not tell him that he does a "good job" when he does so. How exactly do you know this?

The ideal for any manager is to get maximum performance from your team, be they insurance adjusters or basketball players. There are obvious limits to this and there are usually monetary constraints, but as a general rule that is what you should be doing. So, yes, they should be attending to "the wants or needs" of all the players, including Asik. You do this keeping in mind that the goal is maximum team performance.

I did not mean to imply that management does not tell him he is doing a good job. I was trying to make an exaggerated example where every coach had to get in a line to say "good job jeremy". The intent was to say that despite it being stupid as crap, if that was what worked then that is what you do. I obviously did not exaggerate enough.

Yes, they should attend to "the wants or needs" of all the players, including Asik. There are obvous limits on this, but the ideal for any manager is

I'm not a conspiracy guy AT ALL and it irks me when some people cry conspiracy with coaches vs Lin etc. That being said, there were a couple games where Sampson was out and Finch was in a week and a half or 2 ago. It seems to me like there was a concerted effort to use Lin differently with the starters that game - more time as a true PG. McHale even said there was a conscious adjustment. I guess my question is - with that lineup AND that style of PG play what kind of stats are we looking at? Harden still got his points and the offense ran as smoothly as I've seen overall. I wonder why they abandoned that so quickly when it was so successful. It seemed to coincide with Sampson's return. Again, not calling conspiracy - just pointing out the difference in coaching style I guess. If we were to keep that style of offense, then I would think Lin might be the better starter - but with the Sampson present style, Bev seems to be the better fit. Also, thaks for posting the 4th quarter stats - hopefully the coaches will take note and adjust accordingly. It seems like they were using a Lin/Bev lineup earlier in the year to close at times. Good idea methinks.

This offense is geared to maximize the talents of Harden, Howard and Parsons. Jeremy Lin is not on that list. When Lin was starting for the Rockets, he wasn't playing to his strengths (which is when he dominates the ball), he was playing Beverley's role. Who does Beverley's role better than Beverley, not Lin. This is all a coaching scheme. In no way does it mean that Beverley > Lin, it just simply isn't true. Lin needs to be traded, and it'll be great for his career if he is. Lin will just rot here in Houston, trying to be a Patrick Beverley, when he needs to aspire to be a Steve Nash.

I like the "amateurish" call out of Lin fans. Disappointed in the site owner.

If there was indifference, then this post never would have happened. If they are infesting this site, then he has the power to ban, which is a much better tool than a flimsy rebuttal, which in my opinion this is. I agree there is an argument for Bev to play with the starting unit, but there is an argument against as well.

This season has been like Bev starting has a solid bench behind him vs Lin starting with no bench. Do you think that could hve had some effect on the percentages? Is it possible that with no bench the starters would be more run down having to carry the team every night.

I saw a Houston team winning at a similar rate with either man starting. Therefore, it is not clear which should start because it does not seem to matter. However the stats as presented by OP suggests the decision is more clear cut (all one way when the expectation is that there should be some arguments for both). Sometimes the absence of a trend is more telling than when there is a trend.

Well, if you're the site owner, bringing out one data set proves you correct. My god, imagine if other NBA organizations were privy to this end-all statistical truth formula. Clutch's article is just an opinion, with stats. On this forum though, it's truth. LOL.
