I don't think cops need guns. As I've argued before, many times, there are non-deadly force weapons, better than batons and tasers, that are available... and plenty of more that would come if the money was there, that can still seriously injure and immediately immobilize a person, without killing them (absent freak indirect heart attacks, etc.) I believe that is the solution to the gun "epidemic". Need to protect yourself? Plenty of options, that are equally as effective, without killing someone.
Take away guns and there will be other ways of killing. It's the people not the guns at fault. Anyways back to the topic, sad to hear that.
People aren't creatures that act irrespective of their upbringing. America promotes a culture of gun violence, directly and indirectly. This doesn't mean video games and rap songs are to blame. But it does highlight to totality of the current American society, which tends to glorify violence, often has lawmakers at odds with public opinion due to lobbying efforts (eg... NRA), promotes a 15 second of fame environment (whether for doing something good or bad), and has a mini epidemic of mental stability issues among a fraction of the population (however small) that might not be treated effectively. Guns, and their legality or illegality, within this framework, has become a problem. When you consider that there could be an alternate world where a deadly force gun could be replaced with a non-deadly force gun-like weapon, that could just as easily protect you from harm, then you have to question the logic of the no gun control position. The only semi-valid argument is hunting. But then, I don't "get" hunting. EDIT: RIP to the victim here.
