Yesterday, 83 tornadoes touched down in my home state of Tennessee. Lynchburg which is only like 2000 people but home of Jack Daniels Distillery and 45 minutes from where I live had a tornado hit it. I don't think there was much damage done, fortunately. As I was watching the Weather channel and heard them talk about how unusual yesterday's weather was for Tennessee and other parts of the mid-South, I became angry. This is like the 4th or 5th time in the last 5 years that tornadoes have rocked TN. Earth to weather idiots - this **** is happening every year now. It has become to be expected. I used to think that going through a snowstorm or blizzard would be the worst, but now without question it is tornadoes. Oh and also, it is going to rain every day this week. So, if you don't see me posting in the next couple of days, it is because I got drowned or flooded away.
Thanks, Smeg. I guess this was more of a rant thread than anything else, but we just had another tornado warning until 8:15 this morning. It is truly unreal what this system is doing right now. There are counties southwest of where I live in which families had to be rescued by boat because of the torrential rains/flooding. If anyone has any tornado stories to tell, go right ahead - I guess this thread would be as good as any to tell them.
I used to live in Franklin, TN right outside of Nashville. We only lived there for 3 years, but it was a lot of fun. For some reason, the school systems there were a lot more open to taking field trips, having class parties, and just making school a lot more fun for parents and kids. I went to Liberty Elementary in Franklin and lived in a subdvision called Maplewood. My Dad built houses in Burton Hills. The best thing about TN was the actual split between seasons there. Summer was hot, Winter was cold with snow, Spring was warm, and fall was chilly with the forests there turning tons of different colors. You live anywhere near there, Manny? Do you know where I'm talking about F.A.?
There is nothing scarier than waiting when a major storm is heading your way with a F5 tornado on the ground. The last time that happened for me was the tornado that destroyed Jarrell TX. The sky had those sickly yellow green bubble clouds that hung down extremely low, lots of hail, then silence- very creepy. I can't believe 83 touched down in TN that is really amazing. From the looks outside we may have some storms coming through central Texas today.
Of course. That area has really changed between Brentwood and Franklin on I-65. There are stores and restaurants everywhere. A good friend of mine lives in Franklin and we visit them about once a year.
FA and SuperMac: I live in Manchester which is halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga. It takes about an hour to get to either one and little over than an hour to get to Franklin. Franklin is the ritzy suburb of Nashville as is Brentwood as a lot of the Tennessee Titans players like Eddie George have homes there.
Manny - Jeff and I were thinking about you yesterday when we saw the news of all the bad weather in Tennessee. Glad to hear you're okay. I don't blame you for being sick of it. Why don't you move to Houston? Better weather (as long as you don't mind a little heat), low cost of living and all the Rockets games you care to attend. Plus, you've already got friends here.
Maybe I will do that someday, Mrs. JB. Actually, I don't mind rain but damn, I am out on a full week of it with severe weather for like 3 straight days. I honestly think that Tennessee has had more tornadoes hit it in the last 5 years than any other state.
Tornadoes never bothered me. We had them all the time in the Panhandle, so we were always getting the warnings on television, but none of them ever hit anything with great enough force to cause the loss of life that we've seen in these storms in the midwest recently (or in Oklahoma a few years back). The worst tornadoes that hit the area usually hit in the middle of nowhere (and there is plenty of nowhere in the Texas Panhandle). I saw a documentary on the news in the Panhandle a few years ago that speculated that "Tornado Alley" was moving East for some reason, and that we were likely to see more tornadic storms in Arkansas, Tennessee, etc. while seeing fewer in the traditional Tornado Alley of West Texas/Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. From the looks of things, that is actually coming to pass (because the Panhandle really is seeing fewer tornadoes than in the past. They still get tornadoes, but not as many, at least that's my understanding. And Tennessee is obviously getting a lot more).
