    But hate now.

So many promising bands have just mellowed out over the years to the point of being irrelevant. So many bands have "sold out" and barely resemble the band you fell in love with years ago. What are your top 5? Here are mine in order:

    5. Rush- still good but fazed out guitars and fazed in keyboards.
    4. U2- peaked at The Joshua Tree and have become way too pretentious for me.
    3. Sting- reduced to doing Jaguiar commercials?!?!?
    2. REM- I liked them better when you couldn't understand what Michael Stipe was saying.

    1. Red Hot Chili Peppers- RIP Hillell Slovak :( These guys are NOTHING like their 1st 4 records. Too bad...

    List away!

BTW, I wouldn't say hate for these bands...these are more like bands I used to love, but now just like in that way where I'll say hi to them if I see them on the street or something.

    1. Wilco-loved them when they were alt-country, not so much now.
    2. Beck-haven't been able to get into some of his later stuff. Loved Mellow Gold and Odelay.
    3. Radiohead-haven't liked anything after OK Computer.
    4. Sonic Youth-love most of their stuff, up until Washing Machine (which I liked)
    5. Oasis-I thought their first two albums were great. After that, bleh.

    Foreigner
    Eagles
    Fleetwood Mac

On the other hand, bands I used to hate but like now are many of those pop bands from the 80s like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, etc... Not a huge fan but I still like them more now than then.

Have you listened to their latest, Vapor Trails? No keyboards at all and lots of very loud guitars, bass and drums. Any textural things are done with processed/overdubbed/reversed guitars or vocal layering. Very cool, IMO.

That was the first one that came to my mind when I read the second line of your post. Another band to me that had good old stuff but crappy new stuff is Creed.

    4. Pearl Jam -- Alright, I haven't heard much of the band's newer stuff, but what I've heard hasn't really captivated me . . .
    3. Guns N' Roses -- I think that is self-evident
    2. Michael Jackson -- Another Self-Evident one
    1. Agents of Good Roots -- They broke up a few years ago after an awesome few years, then a TERRIBLE album ("One By One") where they completely "sold out" and lost what made them rock

When I was young and stupid I liked these bands. Now that I'm old and stupid, I cannot listen to these bands for more than five seconds without becoming physically ill.

    REO Speedwagon
    Boston
    Foreigner
    Styx
    Kansas

Please excuse me, I now must vomit.

Incubus: Too many mushy songs. I liked them better when they were loud and obnoxious.

Beck: Was better when he wasn't so depressing.

Everclear: I liked them when they were loud an obnoxious.

    Cake: Singer annoys me now.

I'm going way back (last month)

The J. Geils Band band came up this weekend, some truly hilarious lyrics.
    Billy Squier
    Urban Dance Squad
    The Cure
    Living Color
    Public Enemy

Those aren't my top 5 or 6 really, but thats all I can remember right now.

    5. STAIND- Dystfunction was raw and angry, perfect for me. Breaking the Cycle is made for MTV, Fred Durst produced garbage.
    4. COLD- See above desciption
    3. KORN- See above two descriptions
    2. Metalica- Look up sellouts in the dictionary and you see a picture of them.
    1. Beck- proof positive that you CAN do too many drugs.

Ian Moore (he used to be the best guitar prospect in the world when he lived in Austin, then he moved to the west coast and got all fruity)
Smashing Pumpkins (even though they're broken up, I hated their last 2 albums)
    No Doubt (what the hell!?)
Kenny Wayne Shepherd (first 5 minutes of the album made me think he was so cool... after that, it was nothing but boring SRV rip offs)
Weezer (one of many suffering from PPS, post-pinkerton syndrome)

    1) Metallica - When I was 14, this was the most important band in the world. Then they decided to play boring, lazy AOR metal. I find them ridiculous and unlistenable now.

    2) CCR - John Fogerty has written the exact same song over and over again. Hearing it played over and over again has made me hate it all the more.

    3) Rage Against the Machine - After listening to Fugazi, these guys just sounded stupid (even with the Harvard-educated Tom Morello) and they have the stiffest rhythm section in rock.

    4) Alice in Chains - Their vocals have just sounded more and more nasal and monotone over time, and Jerry Cantrell reminds me of every other metal guitar player,

    5) Smashing Pumpkins - Has anyone noticed that Billy Corgan wrote an entire album about a girl who dumped him just to get her back and then dumped her for a model later on? I wonder if she noticed that he doesn't sing but instead screams or whines. Finally, he chose two band members based on their looks and then b****es when they suck. The epitome of rock pretentiousness and mediocrity.

(Dishonorable mention) Cream - Eric Claption may have been "God" before Hendrix hit the scene, but all members of this band just sound flaccid and constipated. My high school band played "Crossroads" with way better energy.

Ouch. I hope you're not talking about Jimmy Chamberlin. He's the only reason I bought Zwan. :) But yes, everything after Mellon Collie sucks ass. Oddly enough, that was after JC left.

Weezer- Blue and Pink set the bar so high that Green and Maladroit could never measure up. Still great live though.

Radiohead- I forgot about them. I wouldn't say they suck, but their last 2 records weren't like their 1st 3 (duh). They were still amazing at the Woodlands last year.

Rush- maybe I was to quick to judge. I'll buy..er, download Vapor Trails and re-asess.

Urban Dance Squad- I can't believe someone else remembers them! Livin' in the fast lane!

Hey, I know that guy. He's pretty cool...I think he got fruity because he got old, not because he moved to Seattle. Plus, he's not that great of a guitar player.

Also, add Weezer to my list. Also, add Dave Matthews Band to my list.

My high school band actually opened for him back in 1992. He was really pompous and I thought his music was boring.

And he is still "God" after Hendrix. While some of his best songs were written with cream why should you bash him as an artist? Have you ever listened to any of his live performances? Specifically his live version on Old Love.

Also for the anti-radiohead crowd i partially agree. Amnesiac and Kid A were decent albums but pale in comparison to ok computer and amnesic. From what i have heard so far the new album should be more like there older stuff.

As far as my list, the only band I could think of is creed. There are many bands that i hate there newer stuff but dont hate the band as a whole but creed is the exception.
