The Oasis is great for middle aged people, the food is very mediocre. Mount Bonnell Texas Capitol Congress Ave. to eat some homeslice and check out the shops
Texas hoops plays Iowa st on Saturday at the drum. That'd be something to do if you like college basketball
oh yeah, this easily. I also recommend Texas State Cemetery, an underrated and often unexplored gem of East Austin that was re-dedicated in 1997. interred or buried there is Stephen F Austin, John Connally, Ma & Pa Ferguson, Bob Bullock, and Barbara Jordan, among others from The Revolutionary and Civil Wars. the monuments and the landscaping, the history of the old State Highway it was built upon(Texas State Highway 165, the shortest State Highway in TX at .51 miles), it is all fascinating and truly a Texas treasure.
Barton Springs Kayaking Downtown Graffiti Park at Castle Hill Salt Lick/Rudys/Franklins Round Rock Donuts/Ramen Tatsuya/Hopdoddys/Food Trucks Zilker Botanical Garden Mt. Bonnell Oasis 360 Bridge 6th Street UT Austin Capitol etc. Man I love Austin
I think the Oasis sucks. Their food is awful. I think going down south Congress is a good idea. Rainey street is a great place for drinks and food. UT Campus is good to check out. East and West 6th St. Mt Bonnell is nice. Taking a drive down loop 360 is nice. There is a great scenic overlook spot there. Maybe just pick up an Austin Chronicle and see what music shows are going on and find something random in that. Barton Springs has some nice places to hang out for food and drink too. I guess it just depends what yall wanna do.
The food is awful, but you don't go there for the food. You go there to have a drink or two, and enjoy the view.
All this talk about Austin is creating a desire in me to drive down next weekend before the Super Bowl.
Lot's of good stuff already mentioned, but a short drive outside of town to see Hamilton's Pool is another recommendation i'd like to add -- it really is a wonder to see in person.
If you go check out the 360 highway then take 2222 (kenoig). It's a winding road that takes you through the hills. I don't know why someone suggested checking out the penny back bridge but it's near the kenoig and 360 intersection. It's not particularly that nice or fancy. The Oasis and Salt Lick are both good for their own reasons but not worth the drive. I can see whiting to do Oasis for the view but Saltlick is just tangy BBQ. Better places in the city or Lockhart.
BBQ in Austin is currently king. Franklin BBQ if you're willing to wait for 4 hours. But La BBQ and J Mueller had shorter waits and are very very good.
Whenever someone comes and visits Austin we take them to Esther's Follies. It's sort of like a Saturday Night Live type of show on 6th street that's pretty inexpensive and hilarious. Although it's very vulgar and political, so it's not for everybody.
Took me a bit but I remembered that bar. Funny enough it is now a straight country bar named Rebels that has a bull you can ride.
If you're a fan of history, I believe the LBJ Presidential Library recently reopened after a long renovation. It's located in a great part of the UT campus, too.
