This is probably just rumor and speculation, but there's not much else going on... http://www.nypost.com/sports/57331.htm NBA RAMBLINGS Look for the Rockets to kick Rudy Tomjanovich upstairs. Our chief NBA Inspyder tells us that this Rudy is way too lenient and soft, The offense has no discipline and Yao Ming is being wasted without the offense going through him. Other openings might take place in Portland with Mo Cheeks on the way out and Orlando because Doc Rivers and GM John Gabriel don't see eye to eye. In New Orleans, Paul Silas was insulted by the offer he received, perhaps a not-so-subtle message they want a different voice. Then there is the mess in Indiana where Isiah Thomas should be history. The Pacers made a terrible mistake not promoting former Larry Bird assistant Rick Carlisle and our man tells us the NBA coaching fraternity says Thomas doesn't have a clue about coaching or even bothers to listen to his scouts and assistants.
I'll take Rivers or Silas in a heartbeat. Hope they're among the available when/if Rudy's job is open. Please let these rumors be true. Please let these rumors be true. Please let these rumors be true. Please let these rumors be true. And,more importantly,NO MR. MEAN!
If I were the Blazers I would keep Cheeks. He's about the only thing the Blazers have going for them right now.
Silas is a great guy...so so coach. He'd need to bring Mash but, he cannot. Let him go to Toronto. Doc? Coach then GM -- here in H-town. Mo? OK by me. JVG? OK by me. RT? I suspect he will be back on the Rox bench. Be well, Rudy. That is #1.
I hope it is true, I am not a fan of how Rudy T coaches. It might have work when he had Dream, but this iso crap he runs now sucks.
Aren't we applying "New Coach Search 101" rules, i.e. If you have a "players coach", get rid of him and hire a disciplinarian, and vice versa. So that means most of these guys (Rivers, Cheeks) are out, no?
they are crazy for firing him! he seems like a pretty good, straight-up dude. just the kind of coach that the rockets could use.
Silas got screwed. He is not the problem. It's the personel. The Hornets, I think, somehow think they can build a championship team around Davis and Mashburn. Problem is that these two are second tier stars. And as you can see, their limitations prevent the Hornets from getting past the second round every year. Heck, they tried to build a team around Glen Rice. Rice was a second tier star at his best. That is the biggest proof you need to never take the Hornets seriously. If the Hornets are ever going to be a true championship contender, they will need to acquire a big man that is really good in the post. They had one in Alonzo Mourning, but blew it in keeping him. They should rebuild because this team isn't going anywhere with this current cast of characters.
You have to understand it's a financial move, a cost-cutting move rather than a "get better" move. Paul Silas's contract runs out this summer. How could anyone be "fired" when he's a free agent? The Hornets owner is cheap. He didn't want to pay Silas the due. So he "fired" Silas to make better look of himself than nothing else. And yeah it would be great if we get Silas as our coach and move Rudy to the front office. He's a very good coach. And I think given the choice he would choose us over Toronto and Indiana. But it requires Les to pay out 2 coaching contracts. Let's hope he is willing to do it.
Isn't the Post kind of the "Enquirer" of real newspapers? Isn't that the same place where Peter Vecsey "works"? Still, I am beginning to wonder. "Les, I'm going on that European scouting trip." "Yeah, you do that Rudy." (That'll make it easier for me to interview your replacement candidates.)
By several accounts (this article being another), Silas got fired purely for monetary reasons. yes, that is a shame. It also shows that owners in basketball (probably like baseball) don't believe coaches are as important as football, so why not do the one contract and out thing to save money.
Before the season was out, it looked like a sure thing that Rudy was going to be bumped up to the front office. Atleast that was the grapevine story and the NY Post may still be hearing that. Apparently Rudy had already been asked to step down and finish his contract in the front office. I can't say 100% for sure that that was indeed the case, but legitimate people were saying that was the case. It "sounds" like things have changed since then though. But there will still be changes and right now talk is around veterans to acquire. I think Rudy's presence still has some clout in the free agent market, but I don't know if that will be the case on any of the big name veterans (Payton, Malone). I think they're trying to decide who the #1 priority is with their $4+ million free agent slot.
