Trying to find something for my parents' small dogs. They had some like these, but they stopped working. I picked up some similar to this design for them, but they are worse. I guess they need more force, so they make a louder sound when they cut, not good for the dog... Which nail clipper brand and type would you all recommend? Are the open-end ones usually better? I'll pass on any electric clipper/trimmer, as I've heard poor reviews and those would likely just scare their dogs. Thanks, in advance.
After 8 years of all sorts of trials and troubles with my chi's hard to reach nails, I've given up and just gone to petsmart and have them do a stump grind...about $12 every 3 weeks.
If you do not feel like you know, and you're hesitating with what you know... I would highly suggest letting the professionals handle it, man. Think of what you could risk...
I've cut their nails before. That's not the issue. When I said the original ones stopped working, I meant they stopped working mechanically. I was just going to go back to the original design they had, but figured i'd ask, since i saw the open-end design and I've never tried those.
I just purchased whatever they had at Petsmart. Have had no issues. They look like the first pic. It's not hard. I have 3 dogs so it was worth it to just buy some nail trimmers.
I've gone through a few, and these are by far the easiest one's I've found to use on my Boxer. She doesn't even flinch.
This is third design I've seen, but have never used: Thanks, I'm leaning towards trying the third design because the one problem I had with the closed design is it's easier for them to pull on it, if they try to get up or pull their paw back.
My wife uses something like that on our dogs and it works great. She told these would be the last ones we would need to get and we haven't needed a new pair in 3 years. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750651&f=PAD/psNotAvailInUS/No I don't know if they make one for small dogs though.
my dogue gets clipped only twice a year (vet visits). He gets on fine w/out. What's the purpose/risk? Perhaps his activity level serves as a file but still...i don't see the need. How do those in the wild (nature) deal?
I've used these with great success on my small, and huge dog. The exact ones from Safari. They have a shim on them (opposite side of picture) that keeps you from cutting the nails too short. I tried the grinder tools, which freaked my dogs out (basically a Dremel). This was the best $15 I ever spent.
My wood floors see the need. I have three dogs running around like caged animals set free when I get home from work. The Boxer gets daily walks but her nails are so thick they have to be cut once a month or my floors get the slide marks.
I'm in the same boat. My condo is all hardwood floors, and I walk my two dogs 5+ times a day. The problem is, I live on a golf course so we walk the edge of the golf course, and not on the busy road so the only concrete we ever walk on is golf cart paths after the course is closed. Seriously though, the Safari clippers are a awesome on my small and large dog.
