Just internet, no tv or anything else. Also the best type of router I can get? I remember being in someone else's house and the internet would always disconnect from time to time. I thought it was due to the router.

    Thanks guys.

Nothing really great in Houston, sadly.

I use U-Verse, but it tends to occasionally suck. Their ADSL is even worse. Everyone hates Comcast. Screw Verizon; FiOS isn't available around here yet, I think, plus the company is evil. I don't know of anyone else with comparable speeds.

I'd probably say Comcast is your best bet for speed vs. price, but they're all likely unreliable. 'Murica for you.

I use Clear. It's ok. It's portable. $50 per month.

I have one of those, it's perfect if you travel or do a lot of mobile internet. I think the one place I've had trouble using it is in the Downtown Tunnel. However, it seems since Sprint re-acquired them, they're trying to phase out the full time broadband experience by throttling during peak hours. I think Sprint wants the network back to provide more coverage for their 4G products. I still keep them but got a Verizon access point as well and just switch back and forth between the two for weekdays and weekends. I would have gotten Comcast, but I ordered a do-it-yourself kit from them back on December 20 and still haven't heard anything from them. I just don't want to have deal with those types of service or trust issues.

50$? Is that the price of internet these days? I know it's portable, but i hope the actual thing is less than that.

Most companies are gonna make you commit and buy equipment.

Comcast is honestly you're best bet. 30-40 bucks for solid internet. Internet has become a must, not an option, so no more netzero

Clear is horrible when it comes with speed. Barely break 200kb/s download on their unlimited plan. Another alternative to a WiMax provider like Clear is FreedomPop. They have lower priced plans (I think it was 10 bucks a month for 500MB), but they have monthly data caps. Same service, same speeds as clear however.

Comcast/XFinity or AT&T Uverse is the way to go for broadband internet.

I pas 34 for 20 down through U-Verse. I think its a good value and they are quick to ship me a router or fix any of my problems.

You can get that price just buying internet service only without having to pay for cable, too?

Comcast is VERY reliable. However. If it ever does go down they really suck at fixing it quickly. It could be days before they go out to fix a line or even a week or more depending on your schedule.

I had it for like 3 year and I think it went down twice in that span.

If you look around you can a pretty good deal. I got $25 per month deal initially.

Comcast is the way to go right now in this backwoods city.

Look for new customer deals and you can find some good ones for like 19.99 a month for one of their top speeds.

Comcast is the most consistent and affordable for high speed. U-verse is a joke if you have more than one TV in the house and I remember when I had them there would be at least one outage (a hour at peak time) every month.

I don't have U-Verse but I wished I had it. It's not available where we live now. So I have DSL. And it's slow.
I don't know about "best", but I know that I have DSL (stop laughing now, please) and sometimes DirecTV's on-demand service says: "Seriously, man? Your internet is slow... we can't show you this programming." :( FML

I switched from AT&T DSL to comcast nearly 4 years. Two summers ago, when I tried suggesting we move back to DSL (to cut costs), my family nearly ripped my head off!

Now that I get 50Mbps, its absolutely insane to think that some folks are limited to 5Mbps.

I've never had this problem with Uverse and I have 5 TVs with sometimes three using Netflix at the same time.

Aren't you a network admin? What kind of a network admin has DSL at home? I seriously doubt Comcast isn't available in your area .

Love them or hate them, Comcast hands down is the most reliable and fastest.

Then again, I don't use a single piece of Comcast equipment. I use a Buffalo Airstation for my router, and my own Motorola Surfboard modem.
