By that standard, once A&M lost two games, none of their games mattered either? After the Auburn game, should they have just benched the seniors and Manziel and just started prepping for next year?
As far as not remembering bowl games, I'm pretty sure everyone remembers Boise State beating OU and Utah beating Alabama - neither of which had anything to do with national titles.
I remember bowl games for sure. I'll remember BU getting its ass handed to it by UCF...I remember the same thing happening against Illinois in the Texas Bowl. I remember well UT beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl. I remember UT beating Oregon in the Holiday Bowl with Major Applewhite leading the comeback. I won't soon forget the game I watched last night.
Lets just go ahead and get rid of 80% of the football programs in the country. They'll never compete for the title, so they just don't matter obviously.
Everyone will always remember the little guys beating the big boys. The Boise State/OU game was pretty awesome. What about the Orange bowl last year?
They also remember great performances. Manziel's performance this year and last are memorable. VY against Michigan was memorable. Players & coaches & fans care about these games. For many players, it will be the last football game they ever play. The idea that one team just doesn't try or care much is ludicrous.
The coaches will always care (Salary bonuses for winning bowl games) The fans will care. (I said that earlier) As for the players? I'll say a majority do care. Seniors playing their last game, players proving themselves for next year.

You don't want to tank, there's no benefit. You can lose recruits that way. Manziel and Evans cant sit out, they have too much to prove and Manziel is as competitive as they come, he wouldn't sit out. Sumlin cant tank, he needs as many wins as he can get so he can get a raise and keep other schools interested. Plus, getting to a BCS still absolutely matters - there's millions to be made. Winning a non-title BCS game? Doesn't mean anything. Losing that BCS game? Doesn't mean anything (unless the coach gets a raise). Now Jake Mathews? He had nothing to gain by playing. The logical thing for him to do was quit the team, hire a trainer and agent and focus on school. Unfortunately a scout may perceive that as immaturity (yeah right) or lack of competitive spirit (whatever) - but in reality, we're talking about protecting millions of dollars. But yes, bro, with the beloved bowl system you're supporting right now it DOES MAKE SENSE TO TANK (Sometimes). But why, Ziggy? Teach us, teach us. Okay. TAMU played UT on Thanksgiving in 2004. TAMU lost to UT. The penalty for losing? UT goes to the Rose Bowl and TAMU gets the Cotton Bowl. Had TAMU won? UT gets the Cotton Bowl, TAMU gets to play pee-pee games with itself in the Taqueria Cancun Habanero Bowl in Clyde, TX. The answer is yes. Sometimes you've got to lose some to win some. Because ultimately, outside of making $$$, the bowl games don't mean ****. That's why they're played a month after the season after everybody has forgotten. Because they don't ****ing matter. None of it matters. I'm not a biased SEC guy. TAMU beat Duke. We killed OU last year. I don't care. Didn't mean ****. Fun to watch. But didn't mean ****. Baylor shreds through UCF if they played in the regular season, they win 9/10 times, Art Briles is a great offensive mind, Baylor's defense made some plays and gained physicality this year. I HATE Baylor and I hate the Big 12, but I'm just calling it like it is. Get over it, stop pretending I have an SEC bias and face the reality here. This **** doesn't matter. Spoiler
I guess it doesn't matter that A&M beat Alabama last year since Alabama still ended up winning the national championship.
So... $$$$ right? BCS = more $$$$ for the conference. Texas got the BCS (a Pac12 spot, not a Big 12 spot) because TAMU lost. Getting the sexy bowl matters. Never said it didn't. The actual game? Meaningless. Win, lose, nobody remembers, nobody cares, the kids would all be selling their rings on eBay if the NCAA didn't have a stick up its ass.
