The beard is cool. Harden should keep it. It's a cool moniker and also a good prop for fans to wear when going to the game. You say "the beard" and every NBA fan knows it's James Harden. Not everyone has such a moniker.

Marketing. He was the third (arguably fourth) best player at OKC and the beard gave him a marketing tool to utilize. The beard gave him greater brand recognition with the casual fans which made him immensely more marketable. He is no longer a third option and is an outright star with or without the beard. He could lose the beard and still have casual fans due to his style of play (albeit he's lost some fans due to his style of play - i.e. lazy defense), but he's built so much of his brand around his facial hair that it'd be dumb to get rid of it now.
