We have speculated about what we think they will look like. Will the color scheme change? Will the logo be different? Will the players like it? Will we like it? My question is.............WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO UNVEIL THEM? When the switched over to the PJ's they had a big pep rally and Clyde came out and showed the crowd......are they going to do that again? Does anyone know?

I hope Steve and Cuttino come out on a stage and strut their stuff like models with the new digs on. They should somehow make it some cutsie festivities for the day we finally shed the jams. Kind of like the Texans reveal-the-logo day.

Actually, maybe just Steve. But telling Cat, "Uh, that's OK; we don't need you for the fashion show," might be an unsubtle way of saying, Go ahead and pack.

Wouldn't it be funny if our new uniforms had pinstripes also? i think everyone would be able to see the humor in that and we could all laugh it off until we figured out that they were serious. And then we would all begin to cry.

I was digging through some of the Chronicle archives about our the unveiling of our current uniforms and found this article. I found it somewhat amusing:

Out with the old, In with the new

    By DAVID BARRON
    Staff

As it turns out, the Great Rockets Uniform Controversy of 1995 revolved around neither merchandise sales nor public image but what club owner Leslie Alexander likes to see when he walks into a department store.

"Do you ever walk into a store and ask for a mustard-and-red shirt?" Alexander asked.

When no affirmative answer was forthcoming, Alexander nodded his head sagely. "Those colors," he said, "are passe."

And so, as of Wednesday night, is the familiar red, white and gold combination that Houston 's two-time National Basketball Association champions have worn since moving from San Diego in 1971.

In its place is a combination apparently more to Alexander's liking -- a touch of blue pinstripes, some red, some midnight blue, some metallic blue and a snaggle-toothed, needle-nosed rocket ship flying circles around a red basketball.

The new uniform was debuted by Rockets star Clyde Drexler, who morphed from forward/guard to runway model for a cheering crowd of about 5,200 at The Summit for the Rockets ' logo launch and draft party.

Drexler emerged with his 5-year-son, Austin, amid a shower of sparklers and firecrackers, modeling the new V-necked, pinstriped model that the Rockets will wear at home games next season. Austin wore a cut-down version of the dark-blue road uniform, featuring his dad's No. 22 on the back.

Drexler, for one, likes the new look, which he said is in keeping with NBA fashion trends.

"I'm ready to play tonight," he said.

The new design, which was previewed in the Chronicle last weekend and on a local television station Tuesday night, drew howls of dismay from fans who bemoaned the loss of the team's traditional look. But T-shirts, caps and bumper stickers bearing the new colors sold briskly Wednesday night as fans awaited the official unveiling.

Guard Kenny Smith, one of the team's fashion arbiters, was less enthusiastic while keeping an eye fixed on the Rockets ' bottom line.

"It's . . . different," Smith said, laughing. "I used to hate our old uniforms until we started winning. Then, I loved them.

"This will be the same way. If we win another championship, they'll become the Gianni Versaces or Giorgio Armanis of the NBA."

Center Hakeem Olajuwon, who was in New York on Wednesday night taping a commercial with Orlando Magic rival Shaquille O'Neal, offered a warmer endorsement via a videotaped testimonial for The Summit crowd.

"I picture myself in that uniform No. 34," Olajuwon said. "You have to see it. I love the design. I can't wait to wear it."

Coach Rudy Tomjanovich, strolling through the arena's hallways as he awaited the Rockets ' turn to select a player in the second round of the draft, also gave the new look a thumbs-up.

"I love the midnight blue. It's one of my favorite colors," he said. "Of course, there will be an adjustment period, but most of the teams in the league have changed uniforms . Sometimes, change is good."

The Rockets ' new look certainly changed from the original concept submitted by Thomas Nash, a graphic artist from Missouri City who won a $1,000 gift certificate and other prizes for entering the winning design in a fan contest that drew more than 5,000 entries.

Nash's original design featured the rocket ship orbiting a basketball but lacked the "Jetsons"-like needle nose and snarling teeth. Local design artist Chris Hill worked with NBA Properties to add the cartoon-like touches.

"If everyone likes it, I'll take the credit," Nash said. "If not, I just came up with the concept.

"I like a lot of it, some of the design elements. The teeth and the eye on the rocket . . . that wasn't my idea."

But it was good enough for Alexander, who sported the night's slickest article -- a pinstriped jacket with the logo splashed across the back.

"I like the total look. It's dynamite," Alexander said. "There's always going to be a critical minority, but most of the people will like it."

In that regard, the ballot boxes open today, when T-shirts and caps go on sale at sporting-goods outlets and department stores across the city. Replica jerseys will not be available for another month.

WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY WILL DO?!?

    Just wait and see!

    Could be very very interesting...

Or just sad and depressing if all stays the same.

    Another funny article....................

Logo artist caught between Rockets and hard place

    By DAVID BARRON
    Staff

When he entered a contest last year to help design the Rockets ' new logo, Thomas Nash thought it would be fun to participate in the new corporate look of Houston 's most successful sports franchise.

Now, after all the abuse he's taken as godfather of the Rockets ' controversial new logo, Nash, who is a free-lance graphic artist in Missouri City, is having second thoughts.

"I'm glad to be a part of the Rockets in a way, but I'm getting blamed for the uniforms , the teeth, the pinstripes and everything else," he said. "I'm getting bad press from the public (on radio talk shows), and even customers I've been dealing with for years are calling me to say, "That's not your work.' "

Granted, Nash's complaints include a tinge of professional sour grapes. As a designer, he said he was hoping to have more of a say in the final design. Instead, the Rockets turned over his proposal to another artist who added the snaggle-toothed, needle-nosed look that is catching so much flak from non-Jetsons fans.

Nash's original concept featured the rocket orbiting a basketball, but with the letters underneath the ball. The Rockets moved the letters onto the ball's face, flattened Nash's three-dimensional rocket and cartooned it up.

"I like what they did in a lot of ways," he said. "I expected it to be changed, but I wanted to be a part of that, and they hired somebody to do the artwork without seeing if I was capable of doing it.

"When I first saw the logo, I didn't like it, but it's growing on me. But that's not the purpose of a logo. If something has to grow on you, I don't think it works."

What they should do is remind us of this time in the Rockets' history.

They should get Clyde to model it again, with Austin.

Les should make a joke like, "I know all of us loved the old look, but..."

And then they should make some fake, phoney excuse and bring out the current uni's again.

    -OR-

They should bring out these horrible atrocities, with slits on the sides and horrible green.

    Now THAT would be something.
