Blunt or Honest? Already a millionaire, Yao is proud of being stingy http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2003-04-28/1041432663.shtml We all saw this picture, what's in the bag then? A spending diary Yao carries around everyday..... (and a story about a donation auction in Houston, cato ended up paying $30,000 for Yao's Jersey)
Seeing how Yao is being paid 20% of what Cato is being paid, along with the fact that the Chinese government takes 50% ( i think) of Yao's earnings and then the US charges him taxes, he's probably not making much now. I Know he recieved a $200,000 Nike sponsorship deal that ended this year and has had many commercials, but there is a big chunk that is being taken out of him. In China, people do not tip either. Thats a Western tradition.
Yao said he is still adjusting. For someone who used to get so little, it takes time for them to adjust to the riches. -G'day-
Something invented in the article. Generally, sports news, like entainment (stars of movie and TV) in China don't have good credibility. Don't take it too serious. Even he's real stingy, do you think he'll reveal it to reporters.
"I'm not used to (charitable) auction...", Yao said, "I prefer donation box. No one knows how much I put in." It's actually a good idea to carry a spending dairy, even you're a millionaire. But Yao needs a PR personnel to handle his charitable donation. With $18M commercial contracts in his first year, Yao is richer than most NBA players.
What is stingy about that? He doesnt want anyone to know how much he gives? So...what if he just doesnt want anyone to make a big deal over how much he may give, the way the media has been around him this year...you know they would. repeat after me... The. Chinese. Government. Agencies. Take. Most. Of. It. he is NOT richer than most NBA players.
For Christ's sake, will you please stop ? What's wrong with carrying a spending diary? It's good money management. You never had any good thing to say about Yao. If you have a problem with him, just admit it. Character assassination gets lame after a while. You are making things up that is not true and trying to project a colored Yao images. You conveniently "forget" to translate the first half part of Yao's sentence. This is the original report: ¡°ÕâÖÖÅÄÂôµÄ·½Ê½ÎÒ»¹ÊDz»Ì«Ï°¹ß£¬ Ì«ÕÐÈËÑÛÁË¡£ ÎÒ»¹ÊDZȽÏϰ¹ßÍù¾è¿îÏäÀïͶ£¬ Ͷ½øÈ¥ÁËҲûÈËÖªµÀ¡£¡± Translated verbatim: "I am not used to this kind of auction, too showy. I am more used to putting money into the donation box, nobody knows how much money I put it." Ever read Matthew 6:3?
Most people ( Not the USA) on this Earth are stingy and try not to spend their hard earned money. Outside of the USA most income goes into survival items, such as food, clothing, shelter and Taxes.
Managing your hard earned money by recording your spending is a good thing that a responsible person should do. Yao does a right thing. Also, in my view, donating with my name attached to it is too showy. I also prefer to be un-named when donating. If you prefer to show it that is your choice but it doesn't mean that other people have to act like you.
First, I think only 50% of his playing contracts goes the the China, all endorsement are his income, since the only contract was between the CBA and Rockets, they have no claim to the rest of his money. Second I find it funny how he say he's a typical Shanghai guy stress his "stinginess", I think that's a stereotype given unfairly Shanghai guys by rest of the Chinese ppl. I'm from Shanghai, we aren't cheap, we are just manage our money bettter a lot better. Yao said it best "will spend when neccessary and will save when neccessary". There's no way Shanghai would be the fastest growing city with the most foreign investment in China without ppl there willing to spend money. Hey, I'll buy the $30 out of style Tennis Shoes instead the new $120 ones, not because I can't afford it but don't see the point. I'll try to tip the waiter/waitress 15% almost always but have never tipped 20% or more in my life, don't see the point. My family can afford a $40,000 Beamer but would rather buy the $20,000 Camry, because it fits our needs best. Respect The Shanghai coastal pride
Haha.. Talking about spending on expensive unnecessary things. I found that my friends who are rich spending their money wiser than others. they are not buying things just because of the brand name but more on its quality.
why don't one of you guys translate the article instead of posting a link when you now not all of us can read that stuff.
Indeed, a donation box would be less showy. But Yao would have a hard time to put $30,000 in it. Some fellow member had already reported here that Mr. Yao was a terrible tipper.
Why would it be that difficult for Yao to write a $30,000 check and put it into the donation box? I am sure it would be easier than dunking a b-ball into the basket.
Sorry verse I had to drag you out Here raytiger comes again. You change the topic, nice try. $30,000 is not a huge pile of money, guess somebody has never seen big notes in their life. What does "Yao being a terrible tipper" have to do with Rockets winning the games? If you want to talk nothing but Yao, why not got to other forums where you will be more cordially accepted ? This is a Rockets BBS.
