I really wonder what was this trade, was it millsap? chances are the $15mill 3rd year threw it off last minute
More like, a happy Asik is more valuable to the team than anything Morey could get in a buyer's market. He did Omer a solid by trying hard to trade him (or so he claims). Morey is still trying to talk Asik up every chance he gets, saying he's high character, a good guy, not getting a fair shake in the media, etc. Trying to drive up his value. Hopefully they can mend things and get Asik back to contributing to the team at a high level. It's a win-win for everyone involved if he can get past his pride. Asik's best ticket outta here is to play hard to build a true contender and drive his value up.
I was basing my comment off this statement by Morey: Sounds to me like some GMs were on board but the owner was not. I have to think it had something to do with the owner writing that $15,000,000 check for him next year.
Couldn't Morey throw in some cash to help offset a bit of the salary payment? I thought he did something similar in the RW trade?
You can only ad up to $1.5 million or maybe the cap is $3 mil but why? Seems stupid. Omer isn't a salary dump. Sounds like Morey is going to just try to work it out and keep Asik long term unless a team blows him away with a deal.
morey interview on asik: http://www.sports790.com/articles/h...daryl-morey-on-the-proper-gentlemen-11923238/
$3million was the max cash a team can use in 1 year so that amount went down because of the RW trade. (3 million minus the cash they paid in the RW trade). So yes they could give some cash but it would be a million and a little change if Morey did want to do that. Still a $13mm+ check. Personally I think Asik (a young, starting C) is worth the cost of the balloon because getting a legit starting C is extremely difficult. But that goes to show you that while owners may say they want to win, they aren't always willing to write the check that it takes.
Sounds like an owner or owners got involved at the very last minute and really put a stop to a deal happening. My guess is that might have happened with Philly's ownership that took them out of the running for Asik & his contract that might scare off some owners. Have a hard time believing that Les and the Celtics ownership had a hard time with the trade as both parties are pretty trusting of their GM's. Anyways, good candid interview today about the deal. He said about all he could say which was more than expected. Sounds like him and Omer had a good talk yesterday, and he's now going to plan on putting everything behind him for the time being and just playing. Morey mentioned something along the lines of the issues with his contract that are a problem now will be a problem in the future, so he's probably just gonna have to stay a Rocket for some time.
I don't think it's Philly. They're below the floor right now, and if the trade was Hawes for Asik, they actually get to pay LESS money this year while taking up more capspace, which overall saves the owner some money by reaching the salary floor. WHich partly offsets his big salary next year. Anyway, given that I wasn't thrilled with any of the rumors that didn't involve Millsap, this wasn't too bad a result. Asik can't be so stupid as to further destroy his next contract by keeping on sitting out, can he?

big takeaway from Morey interview: "Omer's contract prevented a deal from going through, and nothing about that will change in the future, so Omer will most likely be with the team for awhile." IMO while Omer's contract doesn't change, things can change with other teams (injuries, new front office, trades creating needs, etc.)
Yep, that is what I thought, even though his cap hit is only 8.3, paying him 15m next year is still a huge chunk of revenue. DD
I wonder if we won't trade Asik (if another team really wants him) until July 5 2014 or later. That date being the anniversary of the Royce White trade and the chance to toss $3,000,000 on top of the trade to offset Asik's 2014-15 salary (White's trade to Philly having taken a big wet chunk of that $3,000,000 we had this year). It'd have to be (Another Cheap Contract Player Like Terrence Jones) + Asik to make it work. In which case I'd look back to Atlanta. Ah well, time to give it a rest.
Second takeaway from the interview: Conditions that prevented the trade from happening are not likely to change any time soon. I think they will keep trying, and who knows what shakes up by the deadline; but it sounds like Morey's dug in for the long haul just in case. Revisiting the same deals in February is likely to yield the same results.
