You know what I'd do if I were Morey, and I didn't like the offers, and I knew that the team with the best offer was sitting there thinking that I have to take their offer because I have no alternative?

I'd tell the press that I'm keeping Asik. That's my alternative. And I'd give them that story, oh, about 24 hours before the deadline. Just in case it induces a team or two to up their offer.

It's bullsh!t to assume they made such a promise considering the team was actively pursuing Howard before, during and after the Asik signing. I mean, I know people like to run with a narrative, but the story is a myth.
