All of the "we can't take on so-and-so because we'd be out of the Kevin Love sweepstakes" is seriously aggravating; Harden is one more ankle tweak away from missing a month or more, and having Asik the Pouter isn't helping our W-L's.

Unless, of course, we wind up getting KLove in two years and all is well.

True, but why risk the opportunity to get Love for Thad Young, of all people?

TYoung: "Yo, Hinkie.... better trade me now, or I'm not going to put forth my full effort out there!"

Hinkie: "Hahahahahaha!! Perfect! Perfect! My plan is working perfectly"

Young has no leverage here. Hinkie would prefer the Sixers suck. Sure, he'd rather get back better assets for Young than crappier ones... but like Morey, if he doesn't get an offer on Young he likes, he doesn't have to trade him anyway.

I'm imagining Morey as Clint Eastwood in some standoff duel right now.

I like young. I know he has an extra year on his contract, but I'm realistic. We aren't getting LMA. He isn't coming here. The Trail Blazers aren't the sellers they appeared to be before the season started. They are certainly buyers. They will be looking to add pieces to their core just like us, not let them walk away or trade them. LMA isn't coming through that door Morey. Kevin Love is a pipe dream. A more realistic pipe dream because Minnesota is more pretender than contender at the moment, but still a pipe dream. There is still this season and next to be worried about before we can even visit that situation. Lets try to win now! Tomorrow isn't promised to you. I remember having a young team with Ralph, Akeem, Loyd, Wiggins, Reid, etc. and then it all fell apart. We had Yao and T-Mac entering the prime years of their career and it all fell apart. I don't want to risk wasting Harden, Howard, and Parsons. Try to win now Morey! Worry about the summer of 2015 after next season. Would it really be so hard to trade Thad Young or Jeff Green? Even if you have to give them away for nothing, I'm sure somebody would take those guys. It would be just like letting their contract expire and having them walk for nothing. I don't see the difference. Win now!

Asik and D-Mo for Thad and Hawes straight up. Even through in one of those 2nd rounders we have laying around.

And plus any deal for Love will likely end up being a sign and trade imo.

Don't the Sixers still owe us "future considerations" for the Royce White deal?

    Agree.

    Agree.

Would have to add in someone like Brewer to make the salary rules work, but you absolutely do that and I'd even throw in a 1st rounder or at least a swap of a first for a 2nd.

    Beverly/Lin
    Harden/Lin
    Parsons/Casspi
    Young/Jones
    Howard/Hawes

That is a much better team than we have right now with Asik unwilling to play or play as he is capable.

Playing for 2015 cap room is just dumb. Best case scenario you effectively waste two years of contending and then get a big piece and hope you can win in the next 2 or 3 years before either you likely have issues or injuries. Expand that window to give yourself a legitimate contender now with the ability to use exceptions the next two years to augment the roster and then begin paying the tax in 2015 when you re-up Parsons.

Quick question to BimaThug; is there any mechanism where Thad and the Rockets could choose to invoke the ETO on the 3rd year of his contract as a condition of a trade, guaranteeing that he would become a free agent in the summer of 2015? Personally I'd guess that barring a major injury or complete loss of skill, he'll opt out, since he'll be 27 and in perfect position to secure a long term deal even if its at slightly lower AAV.

Larry Coon's FAQ makes it seem that it would be no problem to do this if it was a player option, but I do recall that the Rockets were dinged for Derek Fisher's buyout over two years, since there was no way for the team and Fisher to tell the league he was not going to exercise his player option.

I personally think that Daryl needs to have future cap flexibility in these deals, and why the deal with Courtney Lee included was a non-starter. Remember that Goran Dragic left over a player option, and was the assistant GM when Mike James torpedoed a free agent deal over not getting a player option and trade kicker. Heck, even Francisco Garcia's player option isn't looking especially hot right now, though a minimum deal isn't going to move the needle in any way.

I have my doubts about whether Thad can consistently guard 3s and play comfortably when attacking from outside the long line; if he can take minutes from Garcia as the "big wing" defender, I think that the Rockets become insanely dangerous. If his addition means Cassipi drops out of the rotation, I'm a bit less enthused; it's still a massive upgrade, but the team will still rely too much on Francisco playing important minutes even when his shot is off and his feet are feeling slow.

An excited and motivated to win Thad Young would be a welcome addition.

I'm assuming that the hold up in the deal though was Morey wanting a pick in the deal and the reason is simple. Taking a contract past the summer of 2015 is ok, but If the rockets are going to take that contract they need other assets like picks to have the ability to move that player in the case that they have good intel that either Love or LMA will be open to signing in Houston in the summer or 2015.

So I'm down with Thad but I'd need to see something that tells me, we can move his contract if we need to. Having a 2016 1st rounder that I could move with Thad Young for an expiring contract next February would make me feel much better about the deal.

Maybe we can split the difference.

Send a 2nd rounder with Asik, they send a 1st rounder with Thad. You in?

As I mentioned before in other threads i spoke with Thaddeus Young once. It was at the dmv, or dps driver license office I work at. It happened a couple of years ago, during the NBA lockout. That's why he had the time.

When I saw him in the waiting area i kinda figured he was a basketball player, probably NBA. He was very tall by everyday standards, black dude with a blonde wife and a small child. His brother was with him as well. Looked like an NBA player to me.

I got to talk with him and he confirmed he played in the NBA. I don't keep up with basketball all that hard, not like I used to. So I wasn't familiar with his name. I got to talk with him and asked him why was he getting a driver license in Houston, Tx. He said that he grew up in New Orleans, LA. Many of his relatives were victims of the Katrina hurricane, and had moved to Houston.

This means he has an affinity for Houston for more than just basketball reasons.

    For what it's worth.

Would make sense to me and you, but you have to keep in mind that Morey and Hinkie obviously thinking very similar in the way they plan their teams not just this year, and next but 3, 4, or 5 years out.

I would guess that 1st round picks are out of question for Hinkie simply because of their philosophy for collecting assets to trade for a Harden type of player when they become available further down the line.

I don't really see the 76ers as a team that is really trying to tank. I just seem them as a team that is wanting to get as stripped down as possible while developing young talent. If they wanted to lose games, they wouldn't have employed the system they did when lends well for young teams trying to win regular season games with the coach they have. Within the next two seasons they are going to need that draft pick in 2015 or 16 to make a deal at some point, and that deal will be for a much bigger fish than Omer Asik.

I don't think you are getting a first round pick from Hinkie for anyone other than Harden, Howard, or maybe Parsons.

Yep this is logical and it's maintaining that balance of contending but staying cap friendly to pounce on opportunities that is so difficult. Adding Young and Hawes this year wouldn't be a bad move IMO. Bass and Lee were crap but Hawes would be great as a backup C and Young is more proven at PF than Jones and more productive than Bass.

I would not be surprised if a HOU-PHI deal gets done in February.

One important thing to remember is that this December 19th/20th thing is not a real deadline. The only way that it actually has meaning is that is with regard to a trade that returns to Houston pieces that it plans to flip again in February, i.e. the type of deal in which Houston's return is primarily in the form of draft picks/future assets, with the players in the deal mostly being contract fillers necessary to make it work under the CBA.

The rationale for doing this kind of deal would be similar to the reason why Morey traded Lowry for a "guaranteed lotto pick"-- that a team trading away an impact player often is not looking mostly for a good current contributor in return, but instead wants a package of draft picks/prospects and so such future assets may be more useful than a current contributor like Asik or Lowry when you are trying to pry away an impact player from an "about to be rebuilding" team.

If we are talking about an Asik for Thaddeus Yang type of deal or an Asik-Millsap deal, the primary return for Houston would be the player and his current ability to contribute not some future prospect. These are guys you most likely will keep for the rest of the year and go to battle with in the playoffs rather than just flip again. They will be similar type of assets to what Asik is, just playing a different position. In any case, as long as you are not planning on flipping the guy off by February, there is no reason to hurry if what you are pursuing is this type of deal.

I think that when Morey looked at the offers in the last couple of days, the question he asked was whether any of the "future assets+fillers" deals are really attractive enough to do right away. And a Bass+Lee+pick deal would only be worth it if the "pick" is a really good one-- maybe one with protection similar to the Lowry pick, like "first pick among any in BOS's possession falling between 6th and 15th in the next 6 years." The "current impact guy (Thad Yang?)" kind of deals he can tabled until February to decide on or haggle more over what's included.

Get it done Morey , Young would be a perfect addition to our contending team.
