Exactly. Lillian's left Bev in the dust plenty of times too and when our D adjusted he made good passes too. No doubt Bev got in his head too but ultimately he missed lots of shots with Bev trailing him.

I do think Lin is better defender when guarding bigger guards.

And Beverley is better defender when guarding smaller/fast guards.

There's no one better than the other imo. But offensively, Lin is much better than Beverley.

True and untrue. Depends on the stats, the size of the sample, which stat you're using, and your ability to interpret those stats. If you know what questions to ask, have the correct data, a sufficiently large sample size, and the knowledge to correctly process interpret them stats can reveal somewhat to highly reliable information.

The eye test *can* also be reliable if the eye is trained depending on context. A professional coach can judge a defensive rotation better than the average person at home. However, that coach can not possibly know the exact point impact of every play that occurs during a game. The human mind just isn't wired to remember and process that level of information.

That said, if you're not disciplined in the use of the eye test or stats, either can lead to assumptions, poor interpretation and bad conclusions.

This is why the Rockets employ a large Analytics division AND traditional scouting. They want the best of both worlds.

Then support the calls to Morey to trade him. Let's stop hanging on to a player we don't need. Let the guy go.

You're basing your comments on one game? What has Lin done most of the games that he's played? Not one game.

Nah, we do need Lin. Good players are always needed by teams. Can we get rid of his fangirls though? Those guys definitely need to go (they wont though) :(

to defend bev (and lin), these are PNR where there's TWO players that have to play defense, not just the PG on ball handler. that's why I harp on TEAM defense, not just man on defense.

if you bring in howard, you are able to take more risk by playing a lin at PG instead of bev. the only reason I see bev starting is because harden.

The pg spot did seem to be the weakest position for us.

Bev. was shooting horribly and Lin didn't do much (I understand it was his first game back).

That being said you have these guys for the present time unless Morey has something under his sleeve we don't know about.

These guys will be your pg's going fwrd.

All this hate for Lin and Bev... soo sad

Beve = good individual defender/on the ball pressure - Derek fisher type Roll. This floaters were pretty bad in the game i saw 2 airballed. Both times he was trying to make something happen but had better options than the floaters. But I think he is good as the starting PG since we dont have a great wing defender in Harden. If your star player is a PG then one of your 2/3 better be an elite defender. So Bev is in the correct spot with the starting line up. If we did not have Harden and had a player like LBJ or George, then Bev would be a back up and Lin would get the starting Nod.

Lin - elite at the rim/ good passing/ good help/team defense.... problems are lateral quickness gets burned by quick guards. This is his first game back from injury, he wasnt going to set the league on fire especially since he needed to get his feet back under him and on court chemistry from not playing for 2 weeks. Also, Sampson has a shorter leash with Lin. Sampson subsitution patterns were slightly different than McHales, it could be acknowledging Lin just came back from injury.

Gotta hand it to the Blazer - they banked on keeping the shooters guarded and forced Dwight to beat them. Hard part is Dwight can't do it when we arent hitting our shots? .

Harden played great but he was 8/18 and parson was 6/18, shows me that they were contested pretty well from Portland.

Back to my point, Bev is in the right spot in our current team make up. If our team was constructed around LMA - I'd pick lin as the starter.

harden did NOT play great. he had a couple of bad turnovers down the stretch. his only 2 three pointers he made (which helped the team) came out of the offense i.e. he just launched a 26 footer early in the shot clock. he continues to hold on the ball way too long. on one possession, parson's man lost him and he was standing 10 feet from harden demanding the ball and harden either didn't see him or ignored him. if you are going to be a playmaker, you have to have your head up and know where your guys are. harden was zeroed in on trying to penetrate.

what we need is a system, run it, and with the clocking running down you can pull harden up top and have him iso but early in the clock bombing is not going to work in the long haul.

I'll mention upfront that not all of these comments are directly related to your posts. Just too much stuff in this thread to respond to individually.

It's not an all or nothing thing. Whether you think Lin or Beverly should be starting it doesn't mean that the other should be gone. You need depth, we are playing both guys.

Beverly is playing 32.4 minutes/game and Lin is playing 29.2 minutes/game. It's not like Lin is sitting the bench and only playing garbage time. Even during Linsanity in NY Lin was playing 34 minutes/game with a greatly depleated roster. Is it really that big of a deal that he's playing 5 minutes a game less on a much more talented and deeper roster?

Yes, Lin only played 15 minutes last night but that was likely due to the fact that he was returning from injury and he wasn't effective in the minutes he got last night. I'm guessing that his minutes will return to normal in the next couple of games.

Lin has played well this year and he's contributed to the team's success. Him not starting isn't a slight to Jeremy Lin and he himself has said that he's ok with it. McHale came off the bench for Boston when he was clearly better than Cedric Maxwell. Same with Ginobli in SA and Harden in OKC. Those teams weren't disrespecting those players, they were simply trying to win.

The Harden OKC situarition is very similar to what we have. Harden was a far supperior offensive player to Thabo Sefolosha but OKC's starting lineup was already very potent with Durant and Westbrook. Bringing Harden off the bench allowed OKC to continue to play offense at a high level when either Westbrook or Durant was off the floor. The Rockets with Beverly lead the NBA in scoring. Having Lin come off the bench is to help keep that scoring up while Harden, Howard or Parsons are on the bench.

Teams just don't just automatically start the 5 players with the best stats. Likewise stats don't always tell the entire story. I could care less who's starting if we win, that's the bottom line.

When people claim that we can't win with this player or that player starting then they're just spouting nonsense. Historically teams have won championships while starting players that statistically weren't that good. If the Lakers could win titles in '00 and '01 with these numbers from their starting PG then we can win with any of our 3 pgs:

    pts ast reb FG% 3P%
    --- ---- ---- ----- ----
    4.1 2.7 2.9 .382 .310
    5.3 3.2 3.8 .399 .311

If we are just going to go by stats then one could make the argument that Omri Caspi is our best defender since he's part of 7 of the top 12 two man defensive combinations for the Rockets.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/64486/surprisingly-productive-defenders

Whether you are a fan of the team or a single player, they are going to get the most recognition if the team is successful and wins a championship.

Lin's absence last night isn't about his first game back.

It's about his tenure as a Rocket, it's between his ears. He was playing great basketball leading up to that Mavericks game and then he inexplicably laid an egg.

Lin controls his own destiny, that's how he got that big contract.

His fans praise him when he does well but shamelessly deflect blame everywhere else but Lin himself.

Blame it on first game back, Sampson, Harden, Howard, Santa's little helper's, whomever you want.
But until Lin fixes what's between his ears, we'll forever be on the Lin roller coaster.

    elliott... Great read1!!!!

But the problem is your audience and they don't want to read or hear anything that you just stated, no matter how truthful it really is.

This is basically the fact. I would rep if i knew how.

    SPOT ON.

I dont mind bev starting, but once coaches basically nullify Lins playing time, thats where the issue is really at. Lin should get equal minutes. What happend last night, I can let slide since he's coming back from injury. Either play him equal minutes, or TRADE HIM.

Lin played 15 minutes and most of them in garbage time. I don't even understand why he is bought up anyway.

    Lin is irrelevant last night.

The Rocket's trio played 40 minutes every game. Jones obviously not part of it. Howard is not either. Only reason he played 40 minutes is there is no backup center.

    1. NO. lin plays harder and is not afraid of contact. bev plays at a more frenetic pace. two different styles.

    2. bev is not a better rebounder. he just chooses to stay around the rim. question is if he's on the offensive boards, where is his man? hope his man isn't running down the court in case the rockets don't get the rebound. and no bev does not play bigger. one shot does not make the player. lin is the one guarding off guards not Beverly.

    3. lin picks them up at the half court line. and its up to the defensive scheme.

    4. not "by far" and man on defense does not mean better team defense.

    5. wrong. lin's turnovers are from aggression. something that you should be able to live with considering he gets to the free throw line 5 times a game. just as you are willing to get bev to learn to run an offense, lin can be given the time to make better decisions. he shoots 60%+ on drives and was until injured like 4th in the league in number of team points from drives per game. plus, lin's a/to is 1.6 and and bev's is 1.7 (that's a full 1.0 from last season and he's been given more playing time).

and as for "crunch" time, why would bev be out there in crunch time when he's a liability on the offensive side. if you are looking at playing off/def that's a different issue. in fact, if howard didn't improve his free throws, he would not be in at "crunch" time either. and ALSO, McHale was playing bev, lin, AND harden at "crunch" time.

anybody except howard, harden, and parsons on this team is expendable including Beverly. if you can't see that, you are blind to the game of basketball. you are hardly impartial therefore your opinion is not impartial.

Actually this statement alone is the real issue....

It isn't about Lin getting more mins than bev or bev getting more mins then Lin... It's about the Rockets winning the game.

I could care less if both of them were on the bench, as long as the team wins. Your statement above is the difference and separation of people on this board.

Fans of the Rockets are not worried about which player gets the most mins or points, we want the win. Fans, such as yourself only care about Lin and his points and mins and that's the issue.

You're looking for anyway possible to discredit the players and coaches to justify Lin.
