Anyone heard anything good or bad about Windows Server 2003 yet? Also, does anyone know where you can purchase the Windows Server 2003 Web Edition? It's far cheaper than the Standard or Enterprise versions but I cannot seem to find anywhere that actually has the damn thing.
There are more features like shadow copy in 2003. It is better then nt4 and 2000 server. Web edition, check windows.com or cdw.com
Apparently they're seeing "crazy uptimes, 3 months, 6 months" http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/overview/dotnet/runningondotnet.mspx
Yeah, I tried all the normal places and couldn't find it - they only carry Standard or Enterprise. I did find *something* on Buy.com: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=20353874&loc=105 The product title is "OEM WINDOWS SVR WEB 2003 ENG 1PK CD 1-2CPU NO RETURNS" and the price is about right (~$400), but there's no description included. Any ideas if this might be it? This is their full list of Win 2003 products: http://www.buy.com/retail/searchres...erytype=soft&qu=windows+2003&loc=105&dclksa=1 Some have normal, full descriptions; others are weird like the one above. Thanks for the help!
I just finished a pilot where we developed .NET web apps and we did benchmark testing on Win2k versus Win2k3. We pounded the web servers at LAN speed with 20 virtual users with no think time(basically a flood of users hitting the site as fast as can be handled) at a Microsoft Premier Lab. Win2k3 smoked Win2k pretty good. Internet Information Services 6.0 is pretty amazing versus Win2k's IIS 5.0. When we turned compression on, the results got even better. .NET and Win2k3 put together offer really good performance. Unfortunately, like any new product, many companies won't take the leap until the product is established and has the kinks worked out among other things. We're still waiting to upgrade our servers to Win2k from NT 4.0 Server .
Thanks, Surfguy. We still use NT4.0 right now. I finally found the thing at some place called PCProgress.com ... we'll see how it goes.
Not sure if that's it, but the price sounds right. I remember reading on MS's site that it should cost around $397. Hmm... just hunted this down : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/pricing.mspx Also, www.directdeals.com seems to have them (I've bought tons of stuff from these guys and never had a problem) : http://www.directdeals.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=P70-00003
No. We were going to but something in the licensing agreement about only two or three times can we use LR off-site in a MS lab or something to that effect. Those slots were already spoken for so we couldn't use it. We ended up using MS Application Center Test.
I've got the MSDN RC's but never had the chance to load them and test. From what I have read IIS 6.0 is smoking. People are still complaining about security, but they always do with MS products. I wanted to go to the launch on May 13th, but I'll be out of town. If someone makes it out there let me know how it went. I went to the Windows XP launch and it was pretty cool.
