Yes - they will. Releasing Schaub costs them $10.5 Million in Dead Money (against the Cap) in 2014. Keeping Schaub costs them $14.5 Million in Salary/Bonus (against the Cap) in 2014. Release or Keep him, we've got a cap hit. But you save $4M by letting him go. Unless you plan on starting him, you let him go. http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Texans&Year=2014 Jay Cutler, Sam Bradford, Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers and a few other QBs are likely to be cap casualties this offseason. Those are other options if you believe that Bridgewater may not be worth a #1 after playing against crappy competition in college.
okay, thanks, but its still ten million to a player not there. if you cut him my opinion would be to draft a qb since there is a cap on the salaries now.
They asked him if bringing back Schuab had anything to do with the firing and he said no. So take that for what it's worth
He never actually said it was the last straw, but he pretty much made it clear he had wanted keenum out there full time to see how he did in different situations, so they could evaluate him completely. Going against the owner's wishes would have to be one of the finals straws, at least.
So was Tony Romo. So was Dave Krieg. So was Jeff Garcia. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. Russell Wilson is a strong MVP candidate and was a 3rd round pick in 2012. Most top QBs were drafted early. That's indisputable. But there are diamonds in late rounds that come along at every position. We've got an UDFA, a 5th Rounder, and a 3rd rounder (Schaub).
I strongly suspect that McNair was worried about the last home game in Houston being really really really ugly if Kubiak trotted his pet out on the field. I absolutely believe that fans cheering Schaub's injury stuck a pin in McNair's ass, and he did not want a repeat of that incident. And, of course, starting Keenum makes sense for other reasons.
if tTexans had won with Schaub, Kubiak may still have the job. If case played through without Schaub, Kubiak would still likely have his job. McNair wanted to either see case being developed or Texans winning.
He saw what happened to Indy when they clearly tanked to get Luck. Unfortunately, Bridgewater is not Luck.
You cant have 2 starting QBs in your lineup, because if they are good enough to start, other teams will give them a good contract, so you have to give him a bigger contract to them to stay with you, so you are wasting a lot of cap space in someone that might not see the field all season.
It probably was they know what they have in Schaub which is a dead QB walking. These last few games are evaluations for next year which is why Keenum should have been in there. What purpose did it serve to put Schaub out there and even if they pulled that game out who cares Schaub is gone anyway. Its unlikely Case is the starting QB going forward, but you have to leave him out there and see if he can overcome the adversity and improve.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Schaub back next year. Personally, i don't want him back long term...but if McNair really wants a quick turnaround, bringing Matt back may be the only choice he has. -the only kind of rookie QB that can really lead a contender is someone like Luck, and there isn't anyone there this year who's that good - Case, if he's ever going to become consistently good, it's not going to be after just 3 more regular season games and a pre-season next year. He's going to need at least another season as a starter to work out the kinks. -They're better off making moves to fill other holes than to bring in QB better than Schaub. -A DE can come in and make an impact right away Because of this, I think McNair and Smith will go with Clowney, assuming he's there when we pick. A triangle D of Watt/Clowny/Cushing is definitely something to drool over. That should make for a more consistent defense, which would mean less pressure on the offense. With Foster and OD healthy again, we're going to be, at least, decent offensively. Really, we should be solid, with the talent we have, new coaching, better kicking, better special teams, and a more experienced Hopkins. Schaub knows these guys well. with more time in the pocket and new plays, he can move on from pick 6 fame. That's the only way i can see us getting back to 10+ wins next season and actually contend. Drafting a QB that isn't sure to be great, and having to adjust to him, sounds like at least 3/4 of season's worth of work and that's a huge risk to take.
The thought of schaub and his just aweful contract makes me ill, just another glaring reason rick the weasel should have been terminated along side Kubes.
Schaub is done in Houston. He can't make in on the field in Reliant without it reigning down boos. McNair has seen this and knows it wont work.
Is this an intangibles thing? Because both Wilson and Griffin oozed leadership, and led playoff teams, one of which is a definite contender. Luck's great too, but his team was probably the most flawed going into last year's and this year's playoffs.
