To dream.... The impossible dream.... This is my quest, to follow that star ... No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
They can, but it can only be the cash allowance the team has at their disposal every year. Not sure how much they have this year, but I think its something like 3 million.
At the time yes, if they acquire him or is NY acquire Lin then the cap hits stay 8.3. Poison pills are the death of me on Internet forums.
@BimaThug: plus, Rockets can still throw in ~$1.5M in cash to offset future salary, which team can pocket in the interim.
We can dream like Anne Hathaway was in Les Mis when she's selling for body, teeth, and hair for cash to pay off her debt. The Rockets are going to take a hit in value to move Asik in this case most likely because of leverage. There really just isn't any great players out there available right now, and the best the Rockets can do is take a deal with expirings and 1st rounders that they can hope to flip at the deadline for useful talent.

Not exactly. IF the Bulls had matched the Rockets offer sheet then the Bulls would have had a $15M cap hit in year 3. The Bulls didn't match the offer sheet so the terms of the contract were an $8.3M cap hit each year. Nothing changes if he's traded. His cap hit is what is defined by the contract that he signed with the Rockets ($8.3M/year). Just after they signed the deal I verified this with Larry Coon and he confirmed that Asik counts the same regardless of where he would be traded.
Still think Asik for Millsap + ATL 2015 1st makes the most sense. Whether ATL will do it is the question.
I'd think each team would want a pick from the other. If the Rockets wanted Milsap, they'd have to be willing to buck up and possibly give them a pick in the deal if they wanted him as early as Dec 19th. Unfortunately the East is sooooo bad this year that Atlanta is actually going to be possibly even a 2nd round playoff team as crazy as that sounds. Their management will be in no hurry to trade Milsap unless they really, really like Asik & believe in moving Horford to the PF spot... which is possibly, but hard to predict.
I wonder about this Asik "injury". Doesn't feel right. My guess is the trade is already done and will be finaled on the 15th.
Neither. December 15th is the date that teams are able to trade players that were signed in last summer's free agency. Starting on the 15th there's more players available to be traded. For example, Atlanta would not be able to trade Paul Milsap until Dec. 15th. The actual NBA trade deadline is February 20th. When you acquire a player in a trade you are not allowed to package that player with other players in a trade for two months. So, if the Rockets trade Asik, they wouldn't be able to flip the players that they received for two months (assuming that they were to be packaged with other players). The Rockets want the flexibility to be able to trade any player they may receive in an Asik deal in exchange for a star (i.e. big contract) at the trade deadline. Because of the 2 month rule they would have to complete the Asik trade by Dec. 19th in order to make any player(s) that they receive eligible to be traded at the trade deadline (Feb. 20th). Does that make sense? December 19th is just 2 months prior to the trade deadline.
