I actually find Kobe to be very entertaining. Such unbridled arrogance and disregard of teammates is a spectacular thing to watch. Can you believe it's even possible in the modern game for one guy to take 47 shots?

Don't think you get it homeboy.

    MJ made basketball global.

Kobe expanded that sphere of influence as a kid and into his prime. He's been on the way down but started with so much potential, he can still attract a respectable audience at 50-75% of who he was.

These 2 consistently produced moments of magic(Tmac in same category) that drew non-NBA fans to the sport - laying the foundation for a guy like Lebron who didn't need to transcend anything.

People who knew nothing about basketball knew everything about Kobe.

Lebran, as good as he is, is an NBA star in a global era.

An NBA star who colluded with 2 of the other best players in the league at the time. Given the expectations with his athleticism and body, the moments of pure magic are few and far between. Most Lebran fans are young, naive and don't remember basketball before 5 years ago so they can't critically assess what magic really is.

But my point is MJ is the guy with the throne, not Kobe. It was MJ who had the endorsements, the movie and the shoe deal. It was he who worked with Nike and the NBA to make the sport of basketball a global phenomenon. I'm not sure why you talk about Kobe like he's some great innovator, it's MJ who did the innovating all Kobe has done is a worse retread of everything MJ did. If you're talking about magic, then that was MJ not Kobe. Even the stuff about people knowing kobe if even if they don't know bball, well that's something MJ already did and LBJ is now doing as well.

LBJ at least has forged his own path as a global icon. The fact is, if MJ was gonna pass the baton he has to pass it to LBJ, because passing it to Kobe would be taking a step back since Kobe is basically an inferior copy of MJ.

Not in terms of magic. In game intensity. Imposing one's will onto a game. That's shwaggy.

The catch is - shwaggy recognize shwaggy so not everyone get's it. they see lebran as a nice, cordial guy who has an easy going personality + otherwordly talent so it's an easy marketing tool for Stern's new age NBA.

Believe it or not, most my peers are not nba fans, and what drew them to watching jordan and prime kobe was their relentless desire to keep going. Screaming at their teammates, screaming for the ball when the game was on the line and making impossible shots. The sleepless nights, the drive. Not always having the sensibility of a duncan or lebron. That's who lebron is, duncan with athleticism. And that's why he ran away to Miami because he needed a system, he couldn't rise above it or attract big names to Cleveland.

it's an underground issue that's not easily measurable by metrics

I think those pictures are from a couple of years ago. Thankfully the "Urkel" fad seems to have passed without too much damage.

I remember Morey saying Patrick Patterson was ranked higher than Paul George on his draft board.

    Kobe announces retirement.

    George. 27.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 4.4 apg, 45.5% FG,

The daddy done did it again.

After taking a year off to rest, travel the world and work on his memoirs, PG is back. It's a 1 man show in Indiana, 2 years away from his prime.

Kristaps Porzingis has the closest personality to Kobe in the NBA today, I believe.

Lebron at the last 5-6 seasons of his career remember kobes last hurrah in 2010 couldnt win a championship after that. And wasnt considered a star after 2013 achillies injury. Lebron has 2 years of king james left then he will start to become a washed up star.
