I think people forget that shot selection is by far theasley dependent on situation in all of basketball. do you believe Monta Ellis to be a chucker? He's taking great shots this year. Do you think JR smith a chucker? You know that once upon a time, JR had a shot chart tha looked similar to Hardens. 3s and at the rim. I thought In the offseason we shouldve traded Asik for Smith, before Detroit gave him insane money. Because I thought in our system, he'd shoot less and shoot less bad shots. Which incidentally aren't even his 3s, but rather his 20 footers. If there weren't such a huge salary gap, I'd still easily take Josh Smith on this team over Jones.
Absolutely agree with you. By signing to that crowded frontcourt in Detroit, Josh Smith was willing to at least try a new fit (unfortunately hasn't worked). With that in mind, It is safe to assume that we could have used Smith's offensive skills to our advantage (devastating finisher and occasional treys). Still don't believe me? Take Monta as an example: Dallas striking a gold mine in Monta is not as surprising as it seems. Playing with Nowitzki, the entire offense is designed to take advantage of Monta's strengths. He is still shooting midrange jumpers, but now much more efficiently due to open looks from the Dirk P+R (midrange FG% almost same as the paint; 50% vs. 55%). As a result of Monta's play, even Dirk shoots at a better clip! *btw, this is partly why Calderon has been relegated as a spot up shooter (5.4 3PA this yr vs 2.4 career). Think of how TJones contributes on the court. Behind every score, rebound, block and hustle play is purely his athletic ability and executing the offensive/defensive gameplan. Thats it. We don't run plays for him. We don't ask him to execute difficult passes. I don't even think we specifically ask him to spot up for the open trey**. Couldn't Smith easily replicate the efficient numbers TJones is putting up while also playing all-world individual and team defense? There is no doubt in my mind. Of course, there is the question of his salary, age/wear+tear and the value of Asik coming off the bench. ** I was watching the Memphis feed for our last game and when TJones took (and missed) that open trey at the top of the key instead of passing it off, the announcers mentioned hearing Chandler say directly to Tjones, "Don't do that again."
how about a young robert horry as a comparison for tjones? definitely not clones of each other but i see some similarities
nice, same could be said of: ZBo <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rh2fn01cngg?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and Monta Before: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2007/6/27/131725/678 After: http://dimemag.com/2013/08/monta-el...cent-of-everything-in-milwaukee-golden-state/ maybe he does have it all
LOL what are you talking about? Shot selection has almost nothing to do with the system, and everything to do with the player mindset. In the Lakers vs Toronto game earlier, Nick Young was bringing the ball up on a fast break and Steve Blake sprinted ahead of him for a spot up 3. Young had the perfect opportunity, he could've drove in the rim or he could've passed to an open Blake. Instead he ISO'd and bricked a mid range J. In the case of Monta, his chucking tendencies hadn't changed at all, it's just that instead of being the number 1 option and focus of the opponent's D, he now has Dirk taking the attention so he scores more efficiently. But he's still a chucker. In the case Smith, I don't trust him to gell in our system because he has low B-ball IQ and still has no offensive skill despite being a 9 year vet and working out with Hakeem multiple times. Dude doesn't know how to score except for open dunks, so he chucks Js in the hope that some go in and he can get his 12+ points a night. Even if they made the same amount of money, Tjones is still a better fit because he can actually hit 3's instead of exclusively relying on mid range Js (worst shot in bball) to provide spacing.
Let me just say, TJ is on his way UP, while Father Time is catching up with JS. And also, a player's future performance is better predicted by trend over time, instead of static of past performances. JS is stubborn so I doubt he would make the transformation with this Rox team filled with scorers as opposed to Ellis with the Mavs who really had no 2nd scorer behind the big German.
The difference is that Monta and JR had bad shot selection and Josh Smith has bad shooting ability. Monta and JR can actually make open Js at a decent rate, but they took too many contested pull-up shots. In order for Josh Smith to take only efficient shots, you pretty much have to make his shot chart look like Dwight Howard's. Even a wide open 3 with nobody running at him is most likely a bad shot for Smith.
Especially when you compare contracts. With the money we have commuted with our two superstars, Murray's job is to plug in cheap serviceable role players.
We should be comparing Smith to Parsons - not Jones. Smith would significantly upgrade our terrible perimeter defense. Jones does not.
Jones reminds me more of a Lamar Odom type, without the mental issues. They have similar SIZE Jones 6'9.5 and Odom 6'10, both have similar length, both can put the ball on the floor, and both have range out to three. Not to mention both can play a multitude of positions. Jones definitely has the talent to make a couple of All-Star games IMO, just needs to sustain his motivation/work ethic. Since motivation/work ethic (according to scouting reports) was his biggest question mark coming out of the draft.
I used those two because of their infamous shot selection. Obviously they're better shooters than Smith. But they're also superior shooters than Terrence Jones. How was Jones' 3pt shooting last year? Or at Kentucky? The point is the Rockets wanted Jones to have that 3pt shot and he worked at it. What if Smith took an entire summer to work on the corner 3? I'm not saying he can do it at this point in his career, but it's hard to argue that players can learn to shoot the 3 ball if they work on it. Lin, Lowry, Jones, Patterson, list of Rockets that have improved their outside shooting is quite long. And obviously a point that the team really hammers into their players. But this is not true with all teams. In fact I find majority of teams let their players shoot bad 20 footers all day long. And once the team/coach let a player does that, of course they'll shoot it all the time rather than going for more efficient shots. If Josh Smith learned early in his career that he should just pick certain spots behind the arc for his jumpers, he may just be a perennial all-star by now.
