Last year's record was somewhat deceiving. When the Texans played the "good" teams they were embarrassed. Also, our running game was somewhat formidable then and the defense better. In retrospect, I don't think this team was ever a "real" contender. The way they finished the seasons was proof of that alone.

Except they embarrassed the Super Bowl Champs and won in Denver....

We were never championship contenders. It was always a lie. We beat Chicago in Chicago in bad weather that favored a strong defense against the run and the better rushing offense. After that everyone thought we were legit. But the fact is we were just average on offense and the defense was probably below average against the pass. The defense got worst over the off season and the run game was not as good putting more pressure on Schaub and amplifying his flaws. The fact is with just a healthy Araian Foster and a Brian Cushing and an improved Keenum we'll be a .500 team. But with Schaub gone we have room for a couple of FA's and at least 3 solid draft picks including a 1st round draft pick qb and we will clearly be in the playoffs again.

The offensive line has to do a lot with it. Injuries also hit the Texans pretty hard this year with season-endings of Cushing and Foster (main one Cushing). Schaub has played just about his worst season of his career, imo. Truthfully, it's really tough to pinpoint exactly what is the main problem, because the Texans have mainly lost by a touchdown or less in most of their games. It's not godawful games where they are getting blown by 20-30 points.

They're doing just enough to lose games.

The Texans should keep Wade Phillips, imo. That's just me, though.

It's becoming apparent that this team never was a contender. The definition of a pretender actually. Can't wait to see what Bob does to turn this team around.

Agree with those saying we never were really as good as we thought. That goes back to last year.

I just don't think we're as bad as the record indicates, though. This is probably a 9-7 team... injuries are helping them suck a bit, but damn, I don't know what brings a team down to these depths. :(

It goes back to the losing steak from the end of last year.

All stats no results defense. Red zone abomination no forced turnovers.
    Turnovers, penalties, and injuries.
    Players have just checked out.

    1) Matt Schaub's historic QB play
    2) Gary Kubiak + Wade Philips + Joe Marciano--all must go
    3) Derek Newton should be placed on the practice squad as no NFL team would consider taking him.
    4) Arian Foster, Brian Cushing, Owen Daniels--Injuries screwed the team.
    5) Randy Bullock--leading the league in missed field goals
    6) Ed Reed's Coverage + "We were outplayed and outmatched"
    7) Bryce McCain's coverage has been worse than Ed Reed.
    8) Keshawn Martin--I'm tempted to say we should cut him but he will probably perform similarly to Jacoby Jones, Trindon Holliday and Quentin Demps on ST.

Teams figured out our methodical, and eventually predictable offense... that eventually lost talent on the O-line and couldn't get by on "scheme" alone.

Teams figured out our methodical, and eventually predictable defense... that eventually lost talent in the LB core, and has never looked "elite" since Cushing has been out (so, basically since 2011).

No front office accountability since nobody knows who is really in charge.... Smith serves as GM, was hired by Kubiak, Kubiak has the most say in offensive personnel/draft picks, Wade recommended Watt, the owner/GM wanted Ed Reed without consulting with the coaches (Kubiak wanted to keep Quinn, Wade was busy on twitter).

The ONLY good thing to happen over the last year was getting the Super Bowl for 2017 and deciding to once again open the roof for a Texans game.
