For once, an admittedly COF thread: Another look at Casspi's D. Can you explain the following?

    Hi all!

A great game tonight for the Rockets!

A really nice W, with fine ball movement, and a great performance by AB and TJ (& Lin too).

Not a very good game for Omri Casspi, at least offensively,
but here's a peculiar piece of data about his D:

The Wolves' rotation in the PF position was split between Kevin Love, Corey Brewer and Denise Williams, if I'm not mistaken. (Brewer also played SF).
I tried to look at their performance in different parts of tonight's game, and noticed something about the scoring pattern of this trio.

The combined production of Love, Brewer & Williams was 49 Pts in 48 minutes: Love 27, Brewer 22, Williams 0.
(They had 82 minutes of individual PT between them - 36, 38 & 8, respectively)
    But...

    • They produced 4 Pts in 16.5 mins (Love 2, Brewer 2) with Casspi on court.

    • They produced 45 Pts in 31.5 mins (Love 25, Brewer 20) without Casspi.
    * BTW, the ONLY points Love scored in the game on Casspi's watch were not related to Omri's D, but rather to his O... It was an easy fastbreak bucket after Omri's TO...

I believe the rebounding production also followed a similiar pattern
(They had 1 each with Casspi on court, whereas Love had 15 boards in the game, overall!)

I am NOT trying to imply there's any strong statistical meaning to this (VERY small sample size),
but there certainly seems to be no foundation to the claim that Omri's D is a liability, to say the least... :)

Can anyone try to explain this?
(Or correct my numbers, in case I'm wrong)

Casspi is a very good effort player who fits well in our system and will take the starting spot from Parsons if Parsons cannot re-find his 3-pt shot.

It's a small sample size. I wasn't paying close attention to who was guarding who but I actually saw Omer checking Love a lot. If you want to read anything into this you have to look at who Casspi was actually guarding, and one game is meaningless anyway, but especially one game of five-man lineup data.

^agreed, i thought Omer did a better job on Love. From what I saw Casspi was only decent when Love stayed out of the paint

    I agree about the effort.
I think D is very much about effort, and Omri is a max-effort type of player
(He's more effort than talent, I admit)

highly doubtful. parsons is playing well despite his 3point shooting he scores by cutting and driving to the rim and is passing better.

How many looks have you taken at Casspi's D?

I'm not reading anything into this, rather than this simple statement:

With the right backup in place (and we certainly have it in Asik & DH...)
we are decently safe with Casspi guarding 4s.

He's a rotation player that's all. I thought he would be more than that too but it won't happen.

I don't think he's proficient at the pf as mchale wants. My guess is the intent was for him to play winning basketball at the 4 and then backup Parsons at the 3. He hasn't done it yet.

Parson is over rated. He was drafted by the right team and plays in the right system. He's not the allstar some people claim he is.

OP is cherry picking stats. Brewer was not Casspi's man and sure didn't directly affect Brewer scoring one way or another.

Love and Casspi were on court together for about 6 min. It hardly had any major impact on the game as result of that.
    http://popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20131123&game=MINHOU

Here is what matters and his impact to the game:

Casspi in 8 shots made 5 points and turned the ball over 2 times in 16+min. While Rockets were ahead by 14 with less than 6 min left, Casspi attempted a 3 pointer with 19 sec left on the shot clock. Low iq play for trying to pad his stats, and was subbed out right away.

Maybe because Casspi and Love were on the court together for only 5:47 total. 3:09 @ the end of the 1st and 2:38 @ the beginning of the 4th.

Also Casspi and Brewer were on the court together for only 6:43. 1:27 @ the end of the 1st, 4:30 @ the start of the 4th and 0:29 near the end of the 4th.
