Mold in my apartment, landlady won't do anything

I'm pretty sure them not dealing with the situation is illegal and you can take them to court... So maybe threatin legal action to see if they get their act together.

 

Yeah molds pretty serious, most homes have mold in it and depending how old your place is it can be filled with it. How old is your apt?

 

Assuming you're in Texas, landlords have a duty to maintain the safe conditions of the apartment under the implied warranty of habitability even if the warranty isn't spelled out on the lease. Here are a couple of useful links for more information:

You could be looking at FREE or PAID rent for a few months if they don't change it.

Type up a letter explaining that you're making a written notice due to multiple oral requests being ignored, and send it via certified mail. If they don't respond, you'll have evidence that they're not maintaining the property, and you'll be able to cancel the lease. There are also organizations that can step in during disputes of this type. They'll hold your rent in escrow until the dispute is resolved, so that will put additional pressure on the landlord to get the issue taken care of, because they won't get their money until the dispute is resolved. This won't affect your credit either.

I remember watching a documentary several years ago about mold. A family had a mold issue in a fairly new house but they didn't fix it right away. Their young kid ended up with brain damage. Get it taken care of.

I wouldn't do this. I've done repairs that apartment maintenance wouldn't do in a similar situation, and they made me pay a penalty for violating the lease agreement on this subject. Do you have a written lease? If so, I'd go through it very carefully if I were you.

If you cut a small square out of the sheet rock, I believe you should still be able to see the mold on the other side.

 

I'd have a third party (a company who repairs and does bids on mold damage) come in and have a look. Be sure to carefully document this. If they find that they just painted over it, your landlord could be in real trouble for not actually repairing a serious health issue. You should really check into one of the local renter's associations. They'd be your best ally in a situation like this.

Take the legal route as mentioned above. Once everything starts coming through formally, landlords will break. I had an issue with an un-returned deposit and once I started talking court, they sent me a check with a quickness.
