Lots of great advice in this thread regarding resources.

Re: purchasing your first instrument :
Bring someone who plays along, if you know someone. You probably won't want to make a huge investment in an instrument if you're not sure you want to keep playing but you will want to spend enough to get something playable. Alvarez makes some great low end acoustics around the $250-250 range (at least they did when I started playing). I also have a Fender acoustic I purchased 8 years ago for around $300 I still play. Avoid First Act.

Things to look for in a new instrument:
Feel -- how comfortable does it feel when you hold it? How about when you push the strings down on the fret board. Can you strum without much discomfort in your right (or left arm if you're a lefty)? As a newbie, you won't really know what's right technically but chances are if it "feels" good, you'll probably be ok.
Action -- essentially how close the strings are to the fretboard. Instruments with higher action are going to more difficult to play. This is something that can be adjusted but cheaper instruments are more likely to have neck issues that can affect the action. The strings should close enough to fret (push the string down to the fretboard) without buzzing. As a newbie, you're looking for an instrument with good action out of the gate. If the strings are way high in the store, probably not a great sign.
Intonation - how well does the instruments stay in tune? As a newbie, you probably don't have a good feel for what in tune is -- this is where having a friend who plays can help. You should be able to sit and play the guitar in the store for 15-20 minutes without it going out of tune again

    RE: Learning to Play
Won't speak much on this but IMHO, the most difficult hurdle in the first year or so of playing is muscle memory and training up your right and left hands. Chording hurts, especially barre chords, and it will take some time before it feels natural -- probably far longer than you would like. You'll want to take some time everyday to play -- even for 10-15 minutes, to keep the motions in muscle memory and acclimate your hands and fingers to how playing feels.

Learning guitar (or any instrument) is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Good luck man!

I would start out with an electric. Easier on your hands. I play occasionally after years of not playing and my hands always cramp up when playing acoustic.

I've never played rocksmith, but I'm tempted now. I could never get from a decent player to a great one... Never had the drive, ways burned out after about 6 months. Then would start up again six months later.

Do you, sort of, KNOW what a Gibson Historic is? Because a Custom Silverburst ain't it. And if you think a Korean factory made PRS is better, than I think you are in a lonely group with that opinion.

Your criticism of a Gibson being heavy is off the mark by about two decades.

Your misunderstanding what I said. I didn't say it was better than a Gibson, just not as bad as how you made it out to be. For the price, that Korean guitar is pretty damn good. The weight is just a preference.

Well I said they aren't as good as Gibson Historic guitars (they aren't) and they are mostly purchased by posh brand seeking douchebags. The same sort of guys who used to buy BMW and now have switched to Audi. They used to be spectacular in the 90's. Don't think I am being unfair at all.

And Gibson's are lightweight for their volume. Either from top shelf low mineral content wood (Historic Reissues) or weight relieving. So unless you are talking about a 1970's pancake body, I'm not sure what you are on about.

You have to go through what all beginning guitarists go through.

First, learn to play "Smoke on the Water" by deep purple on the low E string. Next, play it using power chords. Then, when decent at playing power chords...move on to "Iron Man"
By Black Sabbath. Then, learn to play "Happy Birthday" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" playing single notes emphasizing you down stroke picking technique. Them, work on your down-and-up technique. Now, you are ready to move on to "Stairway to Heaven" and could try some finger tapping techniques from EVH's "Eruption". And, you can play some basic Blues riffs in the low E and maybe move into Pentatonic scales.

This is a rite of passage for any new guitarist. Do not circumvent!

If you have a pickup in the soundhole, or an acoustic/electric or something to that effect, yes.
