Learn to play guitar first...then bass. Bass is super easy in comparison and you're basically killing 2 birds with one stone by learning guitar first. I would also recommend starting on acoustic and then moving to electric. You will develop better strength and dexterity on acoustic and should also develop a better sense of rhythm on acoustic. If you want to hear a band from a Clutch Fan, check out www.reverbnation.com/theheardtheorem . If you dig it, like us on Facebook and what not.

It can also be discouraging to shell out a lot of money for a guitar only to find you have no aptitude for it.

Really busy at work right now or I'd look it up, but do the PRS have serial numbers on them to find out what level of trim it is? One looks exactly like the one I have on that site but it's valued at $7995.00??? I know I got a deal on it back then knowing the owner of a guitar shop, but do these really go up in prices like this?

 Why did you end this with a question mark?

    (It's not a question.)

Says the guitarist who switched to Bass.

Bass is an entirely different beast. If you play it like a guitar, you're doing it wrong.

The fretboard is the same and its infinitely easier to go from guitar to bass than from bass to guitar. Playing the bass is stylistically different from guitar but the fundamentals are as similar as any 2 instruments get that I can think of.

I used justinguitar.com online. It was free and had beginner and intermediate lessons. He talks way too much at times but teaches well.

No. After the mid 90's PRS aren't even up to par with Gibson Historic guitars. They are mostly for posh brand seeking douchebags.

(comments from a similar thread from a few years ago)

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=185566&highlight=guitar+acoustic

as someone who has been playing for 20 years, imo, the very first thing you should learn are your chords. i always advise people who want to learn to start off on acoustic and to learn your chords and how to stay in time. alot of people can play all the notes in the world, but they have horrible rhythm so they are lousy guitarists - it takes two hands to play guitar!

just pick out a few songs that you like and know and google search whatever it is and "guitar chords". you dont need tablature or even sheet music. just the chords (E, Dmin, A7, ect).

maybe you know someone else who is interested in learning? if so, yall get together and just start playing - thats the best way to learn. when i started there were like 3 of us who all got into guitar at the same time. at first we just sat around strumming E and Eminor for a couple hours at a time. as we learned other chords we incorporated that into what we did. then we learned how to 'stick' parts together and create 'songs'.

i knew kids growing up when i started playing who went and got and electric guitars and took lessons at the local music store. they could play the latest green day or pearl jam song, but if you wanted to just sit down and do some simple improv jamming they were clueless. they didnt know how to play w/ other people and usually had poor rhythm (right hand). these are the people who generally did not stick w/ the guitar for more than a year or so.

check this out - 5 useful scales. learn the minor pentatonic (2nd one) first - its the easiest. then you add the "blue note" and you have the blues scale. learn how to walk it up and back down and just do it note by note - G scale then G# scale then A scale and so on.

this one is a good reference for those dreaded 'chords'!

I have to disagree with you there bro, and I'm just talking about the SE models. Its a lot about personal preference though.

I think Gibsons are amazing, and I'll get a Les Paul Custom Silverburst when I have enough, but they are pretty damn heavy.

My first encounter with a PRS (semi-hollow) was like ok, I'll just plug this guitar in. When I picked it up, it was lighter and felt better in my hands than any guitar I had ever played . I didn't even know it was an SE but it played so bright and resonant. I ended up switching my pickups for some seymour duncans (George Lynch customs) but even before that it sounded amazing. I think actual PRS guitars are worth the $5000 price tag tbh...

So f'ing true! While a guitar player picking up bass (or bass player picking up guitar) might bring some interesting techniques or melodic / rhythmic sensibilities to the new instrument, it's far more common that you just end up being lousy at the other instrument. (Good) guitar playing and bass playing are just so different.

Because I'd like to know why you would type that way. It was a question for you only, on a post you made.

Where else could I have asked you that?

Why are you in such a bad mood?
Does it bother you that I am trying to help you type better? Fine. Ignore my assistance.

AND, just FYI: I think you meant to use continuously.

The reason people stop playing guitar is because it's difficult, and practicing can be tedious and/or boring. This makes it fun, and takes the practice out of it.
