    Laci Peterson's remains identified

SACRAMENTO , California (CNN) -- DNA tests confirmed Friday the bodies of a woman and a baby boy found in the San Francisco Bay area were that of Laci Peterson and her son.

Peterson, eight months pregnant with a son who was to be named Connor, disappeared from her Modesto, California, hometown on December 24.

Her husband, Scott, was arrested Friday in San Diego and taken back to Modesto.

"There is no question in our minds that the unidentified female is Laci Peterson and the unidentified fetus is the biological child of Laci and Scott Peterson," said California Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

He added that the chances of the Petersons not being the parents of the boy were in the billions.

The bodies washed ashore Sunday and Monday in separate locations about two miles from the marina at Point Isabel Regional Park on San Francisco Bay.

Forensic teams could not immediately identify the bodies and Contra Costa County coroner's office called in a forensic anthropologist to examine the remains.

DNA tests were conducted because the body was missing its head, sources close to the investigation told CNN. Without the skull, investigators could not use dental records, the quickest tool in body identification.

A passer-by discovered the woman's badly decomposed remains Monday less than two miles away from where those of the baby boy were found a day earlier.

The corpses were found about 80 miles west of Modesto. Laci Peterson was due to deliver her son February 10.

Modesto police recently reclassified the Peterson case as a homicide.

Investigators have twice searched the Petersons' home and impounded Scott's car and boat shortly after Laci's disappearance. Police had not called Scott Peterson a suspect in the case.

CNN Correspondent Mike Brooks contributed to this report

Is anyone surprised by the fact that the husband prolly did this (in light of all we now know) ? I bet they found blood on the boat/truck. It's almost impossible to remove all blood from stuff, at least according to the crime shows I watched on the Discovery Channel/TLC.

I agree that the writing was on the wall. The tragedy of this matter softens the heart. Its difficult to contemplate and comprehend this guy's motive. When you have a young soon to be mother who had so much to anticipate for it just boggles the mind how someone could do this to her. A very sober situation.

I was wondering about the seperate bodies as well. The baby still had the umbilical cord attached, but if the child was born and it was due in February, well then Laci was alive until then. The condition that Laci's body was found in was horrible, I wish I hadn't read the article on MSNBC.

I don't watch many crime shows on those channels, but I do watch CSI. :) I know those are all with actors and stuff, but man, after watching those shows, I know that it would be almost impossible to get away with murder. They can get evidence from just about anything anytime, just about.

Why is this story so big? Because the wife is hot?

Don't murder cases happen all across the country? What makes this such big national news?

Asking why this is such big news is kinda like asking why the Elizabeth Smart case was national news. Don't kids get abducted all the time?

    Asking that is pointless.

Besides...the fact that she was 8 months pregnant makes this even worse than a marital homicide.

The fetus will be expelled from the mother's body as decomposition occurs. It is called a "coffin birth".

I don't try to criticize vernacular, but more and more I'm seeing "prolly" being an acceptable form of language.

THIS IS MORONIC!!!! I'm so tired of moron's being able to put words into the Dic. simply because so many other moron's follow it because it's easy.

These people made the word "irregardless" a word. (Websters)

BTW: IRREGARDLESS IS NOT A WORD!!!!! Or is it the opposite of "Regardless".

I'm just so damn tired of stupid people.

The Enlish language evolves. New words are added as usage dictates.

    Irregardless of your implications otherwise.

My point is why do some cases, like the Smart case, become national news when so many of the same crimes happen? What makes the other less significant?

in the case of Elizabeth Smart, I think because she was Mormon, and there is a strong Mormon tie, I think, around the nation, so yeah, I guess people would give a rat's ass.

and the Peterson one. I would like to bone the wife. They have some money, so yeah, people love that kind of stuff. Nobody cares about the innercity killings. Nobody cares about the grand theft autos.

I guess it's like a tv show almost?

Because there is something about each case that the networks think people will be curious about. An unsolved disappearance of a woman 8 months pregnant while her husband is fishing. Oh and to make it more interesting...they're from Monica Lewinski's hometown. The Nielsen folks are salivating.

Smart case? The child was kidnapped out of her bed the same night her parents were having an orgy.

    RATINGS...plain and simple.

So how do you explain the focus on Shoshona Johnson (?) the black American POW? She is none of the above.
