Did anyone else catch the CBS Evening News tonight?

They ended the broadcast with a story close to home for many of us: The overpopulation of grackles (sp?) in Texas.

Having lived in this state most of my life, I never really saw them as a nuisance, except for the ones that live in the tree in the middle of the parking lot at Trudy's Northstar in Austin. Don't even try to park your car under that tree, it'll come out with a new white paint job.

But apparently the problem is so severe that it garnered the closing segment of the national news tonight.

Sure they cause a lot of racket and they're EVERYWHERE, but I never really gave them a second thought (besides Trudy's), at least not enough to put them on the news.

Too bad that the officials they interviewed had heavy "hickish" accents, just perpetuating the stereotype that all Texans have to suffer through whenever leaving the greatest state in the land. ;)

    Grackles sucked.

    They deserve death.

I remember when I was at UT, they littered the place with their nasty poop.

At some point, there was a conspiracy to leave tiny bits of alka-seltzer on the ground hoping they would ingest them and implode.

And after a rainstorm, you couldnt walk from Jester to Welch without a chemical weapons-proof gas mask.

Eventually they started shooting those cannons to make them go away.

Yep, they're pretty bad at A&M too, but I wouldn't think they're bad enough to make the national news. They make a mess out of Kyle Field.

Every once in a while you'll see school employees shooting off what pretty much amount to really loud cap guns to scare them away.

Last year, there was this truck in the lot on Welborn and near Kyle that was covered in a crust that had to be at least an inch thick, did you ever see that truck? I haven't been there in a while, I hope somebody got rid of that damn thing.

Park your car under the wrong tree(s) on 6th street or Highland Mall and your paint job is toast. Grackles are the devil's pigeons I can't believe they are still protected as a migratory bird.

What the hell is it about state schools that attracts these stupid birds!?!?!

And they are PROTECTED...since they are migratory birds. It is a fine to kill one.

On the parking lot near the rec center at A&M there used to be PILES of bird feces around the curbs. It was disgusting AND it is a health hazzard from the mold buildup in those piles of $hit.

Yep. Gotta watch for those birds by Dillard's at Highland. They're also a big problem if you park on 5th St. near the Crown Plaza (formerly Sheraton).

My first weekend at SWT, we drove up to 6th St. and we couldn't believe our luck to get a prime spot on 6th, a couple of blocks west of 35. We found out later that night why the spot was open. Luckily, the car wash we stopped at used the same code for every car wash, and we went through like nine times.

don't birds die when they eat uncooked rice? i thought that's why people don't throw it at weddings anymore. just drop some whereever you see them gathering.
