SAN ANTONIO — Buried deep in the newest Texas poll from Public Policy Polling is an interesting little tid-bit that will probably irritate Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to no end:

Thirty-eight percent of all respondents claim the four-time champion Spurs as their favorite NBA team. That’s nearly twice as many as the Mavericks, who were in a virtual dead heat with Houston at 22 percent to 21 percent.

(No telling about the remaining 19 percent, but we’re assuming they alternate bandwagons between the Lakers and Heat, or have the grave misfortune of not being fans of the Association.)

This despite, at 28th, trailing well behind Dallas/Fort Worth (No. 5) and Houston (No. 6) on Nielsen’s national market rankings.

It’s just another reason for Cuban to hate the Spurs, joining that “ugly-ass, muddy-watered thing” we call a River Walk and the fact the Mavericks have had a better record in just two of the 14 seasons since he purchased the team in 2000.

People root for winners. When they stop winning, many lose interest. This is true in any sport and for virtually any team. There are very few exceptions to that.

The spurs, by virtue of the bogus Duncan lottery have never slowed. They had to tolerate one bad season. They make the playoffs every year, 23 consecutive trips to the playoffs since 1990. And not just made the playoffs, they usually advance (only 4 first round exits since 92)

They lucked into 2 of the greats. hard to lose many fans when you win 4 titles, and regularly threaten. I bet if this poll was taken 2 years ago, the Mavs would have been neck and neck.

We can re-take Texas easy though.

Part of this is that the Texans/Cowboys steal fans.

San Antonio's only real sports team is the Spurs. It is die hard out here.

    Basketball is unimportant in Houston/Dallas.

Dunno about that, it also roughly coincided with the Cowboys becoming the only Texas NFL team for a decade.

It also helps that the Spurs are zoned to more of the state than anyone. Yes, Houston and DFW have more people but that's the only major cities that get the Mavs and Rockets (if we had real distribution).

The Spurs are the local NBA feed for San Antonio (2.2 mil), Austin (1.8 mil), Corpus (500K), El Paso (830K), Lubbock (300K), Amarillo (250K), and virtually every small community west of I-35 in the state.

I was at TAMU when Dallas was in the finals. All those jabronis hated the Rockets, yet rooted for the Astros in the World Series. People are flakes, man.

    Les?

This is why I couldn't root for the Spurs during the finals. Every championship they win likely steals a fan from us. Yeah it's a casual fan but it's still a fan.

I was in El Paso for Game 6 and was one of only two people who left with a smile.
