Aggreed, If Posey is after the biggest contract he can bag, he will be gone...but if he really wants to remain a Rocket, he will take less. To date, all indications are that he stays.

That's just priceless. Doesn't Posey know that this is RudyT's new motion offense? He's lucky he wasn't here last season before we put that motion offense in, he'd really have been lost then.

Posey has to be a little bit scared about coming back next year. He's gonna be used the same exact way, and he's not gonna get any help when trying to score some easy baskets.

I think Posey's value is probably a 5 yr 25 mil contract or so. I seriously doubt any team is going offer him ridiculous money ie 6 yrs 42 mil or what not. There is way too much luxury tax concern and such going around the NBA for those kind of numbers to be floated around. The sad part would be if the Rockets cant even pony up the 5 mil a season b/c they wasted so much on other stupid contracts. Posey has been absolutely scorching the last two months since he has found his niche in the offense. Just check out the March and April numbers, they have been phenomenal. Posey has essentially shot 50% from the field and almost 40% from the arc over the final 2 months. Also, he has scored in double figures, rebounded well and upped his steal count all with only taking 7-8 shots per game. If that is not the perfect role player for this team, then I dont know what is. Posey understands the game well and moves well without the ball, something this team sorely lacks.

3 years, 12 million. take it (hopefully) or leave it. we've overpaid role players too many times already. at that salary and length, he's moveable (if necessary) in the future.

Seems ever since we read about Posey working with Ast Coach Boylen on his shot Posey started on a tear in his shooting. Posey moved to that set shot and his shooting and confidence have been soaring. You have to love his hustle and energy everynight. Really "shooting" was his only weakness and he is starting to show improvement in that area. Posey is a nice role player for this team, hopefully his salary demands won't be too much for us to resign him.

A lot of players suck after a long guaranteed contract.

If we sign him to a 5 year deal, he could suck next year and we'd be back to square 1.

He's shown improvement but I wouldnt lock him for that long at that price unless he's at the gym tomorrow shooting 200 shots a day ala Larry Bird.

I think our biggist problem is the coaching system. We paid too much for role players and also demand too many on them. A better team would build on one or two superstars, they got paid for maximum money, they get the balls in every possesion (do not need shoot everytime though), the role players with less money, small contract, this would make them playing harder, easy to manage.
In this way, we will have a more despline team. Easier to excute our offense and defense plan.
If you looked at Laker's and San Antonio's rosters and their contributions. You know why I am saying this. There are some vetran players which cost a lot but can not produce too much. It is ok to keep one or two of them, like Glen Rice in Houston, Hardway in Phoneix, Pippen in Portland, but for a young guy like MoT, Moochie, Cato, or Possy, if you offer him too much, they will dissapoint you 100%. If I were the coach, I would play the cheap Hawkins, Morris, Nachbar more, even we waste some money on the bench, but we can build a better team with futures based on Steve and Yao with our own offense system.
I really do not like too much trade talks. It does not help you win the champions. A superstar contribute more if he stays where he is. Our real problem is the coaching. I did not mean Rudy can not bring us another suprise. But he need adjust his requirments to the players. Otherwise we will not going anywhere next season neither.

    Dallas Rocket, cscyxl01

You both bring up some good valid points. I also wish Rudy well, but there needs to be a system, direction and discipline in order for the Rockets to win.

JP, is very good at understanding his role with the team and the way he plays the game brings back memories of Mario Ellie. We need more players like that.

    RIET,

Actually, the word on Posey is that he used to get up at 5 AM in the morning during the offseason to go to Westside and work on his shooting. I dont remember who had posted that, but someone mentioned it in this forum at the time of the trade. Its really a travesty that someone who has done everything possible to fit into this system and has really been a perfect role player is going to end up getting the short end of the stick from the Rockets b/c the little dribbler Moochie received a 7 yr 22 mil extension for no apparent reason. Maybe if Moochie put in half as much time as Posey, his shot wouldnt look so weak. I can understand if they refuse to commit Mo Taylor type money to Posey, but 5 yrs 25 mil is VERY reasonable imo. Devean George signed for 4 yrs 21 mil with the Lakers, and he is not half the player Posey is.

If we resign Posey, how about giving him some playing time at 2 guard? We need a third guard to contribute, and if we use Posey at 2, then that opens up playing time for Rice, Morris, or Nachbar at the 3.

We should talk to him right now and say we are prepared to offer him a few hundred 100K per year over the MCE level (I think we can do this because he is our FA) for up to 6 years. That should all but eliminate risk for losing him because I think the few teams under the cap will go for bigger fish and Posey should feel we valued him by paying more than the MCE.

I think this would a win for Posey and a win for us.

    DS -
    A couple of quick thoughts...

I hate to nit pick but I am almost sure it is illegal for the Rox to talk about a contract with Posey until after July 1st (correct aelliott, hp, NIKE?).

Also, it may be prudent to re-sign Posey after the possibility of moving Rice's expiring contract (also after July 1). That way, you can determine what player(s) are involved in the deal both outgoing (Mobley?) and incoming (like a solid vet with backup SF potential which allows Posey to play some 2 and getting more "bang for the buck" so to speak).

    I'm all for keeping Posey.

I love his hustle on defense and I love the way he plays on offense. I think he is EXACTLY the type of player the Rockets hoped Pippen and S. Anderson would be for the team. Luckily Posey hasn't fallen under the trap of becoming nothing but a spot up shooter like those 2.

He makes smart decisions with the ball most of the time. If there's an opening he attacks the basket, if not, he makes the pass immediately. You'll never see him holding on to the ball for more than 3 seconds. He's also an underrated passer.
