Maybe Dwight's free throw lows is because all the pounding he take as he get foul, since he is so strong, opponents has to foul him extra hard. So maybe in practice to simulate in game situations, someone on rockets staff has to knock him around a little between each pair of free throws lol, hope it would improve his free throws that way. - Jin
It is a sports forum and what's up with the judgmental BS. If you see a thread that you don't like, just don't post on it..It is just that simple.
How about this during the hack a Howard strategy. Call time out, and put in brooks and Lin. I think those two are your fastest guys with the ball. In bound it to them around the near side top of the three point line or if you can, closer to the half court line. Everyone is going to be standing still waiting for the one guy to draw the foul. During the time Dwight is attempting to get fouled Lin or brooks should use their quickness to drive to the rim and steal two points on a layup.
It is all three and some, mechanic's routine, muscle memory, confidence in making that easy shot, and mental weakness in that department. Another thing you don't know when some of these members started following this game...Bwhahahahahaha you so called internet experts be tripping up in this forum.
This is serious problem, and not just for Howard, but the entire Rocket team. We will lose games this season because we can't make a free throw at the end of games. The entire Rocket team is littered with bad free throw shooters. I would really like to see Rick Barry work with Howard and maybe Asik with the underhanded shooting technique. It couldn't make them any worse, and it may really help. Why not give it a try?
Interesting theory. Maybe Yao could have been a 100% FT shooter if he didn't get pounded like he did.

Lin did this once in the Toronto game It would only work once or twice before the defense got wise though
Yea, hack a mr mean was even worse than hack a Howard. I used to feel bad for the guy because he was so bad at shooting free throws.
Well damn after listening to Dwight's practice interview, I ain't impressed. He said he thinks about FT all the time even when he shoots in the game b/c ppl keep mentioning all the damn time to him....talk about mental weakness. I expected more from dwight.
No amount of advice is going to help DH out as much as gaining a shooter's touch. Therefore, my “1/2 cent” recommendation for DH to improve his FT shooting is to work on the basics of gaining "touch" in his shooting. (I admit that this is more of summer activity, but it's never too late to get started!) --Start from 1 ft from the basket and take 10 shots at each spot while moving in a semicircle pattern around the basket. (Focus on perfect form, arc and concentration on a single point on the rim.) Basically, how Larry Bird and many other greats did it. --Then take one step back and repeat this routine until he gets to about 15 ft from the basket. This will help develop a “touch” for how the ball should roll off his fingers from various locations on the court. --Don't focus so much on making baskets as much as just getting in tune with the feel of the ball rolling off the fingers from various locations and getting the ball to stick to the basket by applying the proper amount of backspin. --Basically this soft touch and proper backspin to make the ball stick to the basket should boost his shooting confidence. Of course, he can have shooting coaches guide his practices. (The worst thing that can happen from this effort is that he might be able to hit a wide open 10 ft shot at some point in his career.) In summary, he has to convince himself that he is actually an "ice cream eater" (aka shooter) and not JUST a "dirt digger” (aka defender/rebounder.)
Who worked with Hakeem on his free throws? First two years were what. 62 and 65%. Then in the titles years 72 and 75%? Was it calvin murphy? I can not remember back that far. Someone should be able to crack this dudes melon and get him up in the 70s
Great shooters rely on body muscle memory. When Howard shoots his only functional muscle memory occurs in his wrists. Not enough to be consistent.
No. 3: Dwight says he’s overthinking free throws – In his 10 seasons in the NBA, Houston center Dwight Howard has led the league in free throw attempts four times and is on pace to do so again this season. It’s a common ploy opponents use against Howard, who is a career 57.6 percent shooter from the stripe. Howard says his reason for shooting so badly at the line is easy to figure out, though, as Jenny Dial Creech of the Houston Chronicle reports: Rockets center Dwight Howard has been a target this year for his sub-par free throw shooting. Opponents have gone to the “hack-a-Dwight” method to put the big man at the line. After another poor performance from the line on Monday night against the Raptors (Howard was 4-of-12), he told reporters he just didn’t want to talk about free throws anymore. “I don’t want to talk about it,” Howard said. “So much has been talked about free throws, just let it go. We talk about it so much, I think about it at the line. I don’t want to think about it. I want to shoot. “That’s what I do in practice. I shoot in practice and I dont miss because I am not thinking about it.” Howard said that he is overthinking free throw shots in games, and missing them because of it. He said he is making up for the lack of free throws in other ways. “I get in the game and I think so much that I tend to miss,” Howard said. “The best thing to do is to let it go. If I make it, I make it. If I don’t, it’s not the end of the world. Even if I do miss, I will be out on the other end, playing defense, getting rebounds, blocking shots and paying back for fouling in that way.” http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/11/13/morning-shootaround-nov-13/#rockets
