Are the Rockets the most popular NBA team in China?

    And are they fans of players (Yao, Lin), or are they fans of the team?

    After Yao retired, were the Rockets still big in China?

    It depend on the region in China as well, dont view the whole China as a whole, they are the same size as the US

    The Warriors CEO mentioned on one of their earlier pre-season broadcasts that China currently "belongs" to Rockets, Lakers .... and maybe another team (not totally sure) -- not the Warriors, though.

    China's population is 4.5 times of the US if the popularity is related with the population.

    Rockets are def in the top 5. Bulls(Rose), Lakers(Kobe), Heat and NYKs are up there with us I'm guessing.

    Las time I was in china, I only saw people wearing rockets jerseys around. Tmac, brooks, scola, etc. if I ever wore a rockets shirt or something, people would ask me about the rockets

    I think it's definitely the rockets

    Being Chinese,

    I would say Lakers, Heat, Bulls, Thunder, and then Rockets

    When Yao was with Rockets, maybe I would rank Rockets at 2.

    There are BBS established for each player fans like to follow in most popular search engine in china(baidu.com). Kobe is leading in total fans followed, Jeremy was ranked 7th as most followed in terms of number of following fans and posted articles. JLin's jersey sell in china is ranked as 4th in china. MJ and Kobe are leading the way in jersey and shoe brand. Based on this, I would say Rox is most likely top 5 popular team, but certainly not the top3.
    Yao is no longer the factor in Chinese NBA fan. His ranking in baidu's fan base is out of top 10. MJ is the only one made the top 10 who is currently not playing.

    i wouldn't pay too much attention to people's anecdotal stories of which teams are most popular. if you can you can find nba tv ratings for china then that would provide you with the answer.

    1.Lakers -Mainly Kobe Fans
    2.Rockets - Pure Rockets fans and some Lin fans
    3.Heat - Mainly LBJ&Dwade Fans

    The three teams sum up with 70% of the fans in China

    I spent a month in Jinan (North) and Guangzhou (South) last year. In the North I think the Rockets are less popular, down South it was basically us and LA. Tons of ads from ex-Rockets like Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes of all people. Obviously Yao Ming is one of the top three celebrities of any kind in that country, I would say along with Jackie Chan and Tony Leung.

    this is the right one, and almost half of the nba fans hate kobe ,this is the reason why lakers popular.....full of fans and haters.....no kobe no lakers
