Calderon might not play defense, but he is a borderline elite playmaker with a great shot.

You certainly talk like you're not, even the biggest Lin only Fans knew that cutting him was the right decision to bring in Dalembert. Comparing that situation to what Brooks/Canaan's situation now is completely moot just because the depth of this year's team requires the extra guards.

The key thing to remember is that the starting backcourt and frontcourt spots are voted on by the fans. MJ could unretire at 50, stink, and still get voted in. Lin was 50,000 votes short of being voted in last year. Lin could very well be voted in, if voters can't come to a consensus.

CP3 could easily split votes with Westbrook, Tony Parker and Damian Lillard. Harden could split votes with Kobe regardless of Kobe's effectiveness. Curry will probably split votes with CP3/Westbrook as a PG and Harden as a scorer. The type of voter who voted for Lin last year is either a Rockets homer/Knicks transplant or probably only voted at all so they could vote for Lin. I don't see Lin losing these votes to anybody else. But there are a LOT of these people. We could see Kobe at 1M votes and CP3, Lin, Harden all hovering around 900k.

Its a popularity contest, that's why they have the coaches vote in the rest.

No Apache insinuated that Lin would get in based on Numbers on the court. Unless he outperforms Harden, Paul,Westbrook,Kobe,Parker and Curry he wont be in the allstar game.

Whatever he insinuated, that's not how it works. The first cut is 100% popularity contest voted by the fans. The second cut is decided by the coaches. And the commish picks any replacements.

And for the record I don't think he should make it, but he has enough fans to say that he has a legitimate shot of being voted in if he doesn't stink.

Yeah, I'm sure it's an established fact that recent Dalembert is better/more valuable than Linsanity Lin. Way more upside too, well, he did turn John Henson into Jeremy Lamb.

I'm pretty sure if Morey knew Lin was this good he could have done something with Flynn, Thabeet and Adrien. Or maybe even have amnestied Scola at that time? (this I'm just bsing)

No, you really don't know anything. You can claim to be a Rockets fan before your join date for all I care, but everything you are saying implies you haven't followed the team for more than a year.

And since you are so convinced that you are correct, let's look at the situation at the time of Jeremy Lin's arrival in the training camp.

Rockets had 3 available big man on the roster. Luis Scola, Hasheem Thabeet and Jordan Hill. Patrick Patterson was injured. Notice how one of these guys is almost completely useless on the court, and the other is unreliable? So you are left with only Luis Scola would you could trust to actually be a productive player on the court.

So, what should a GM do under this situation? He sees that he has 3 PGs under contract, two of them are good enough that they are now even starters of their respective teams right now (Lowry and Dragic) and one of them is under contract. Should he keep the 4th PG "just in case" he becomes something terrific? Or should he fill his position of need?

I'm not even touching on the veto yet, which would have sent Goran Dragic away and opened up a spot for Jeremy Lin. Since that didn't happen, Morey had to change his plans.

Like I said, maybe you should do a little more search on this topic before making hindsight statements.

I think Apache is insinuating that if Lin was playing well at the beginning of the season he has a chance through the voting because of how many votes got last season when he wasn't even playing that well. So if he is playing well, he could get those votes and more. However, I believe a lot of the votes Lin got last year was due to the fact that it was the season right after Linsanity. Lin not playing as well last season might lose him some votes.

I don't think anyone knew Lin was that good, even Lin was surprised how good he was. He hadn't done anything to like that before in games to tell Morey that he would be a good as he was. Lin also played some limited mins with the Knicks and he didn't play that well. I think they were all surprised by how he did in that first breakout game. Good for him that he continued to play well after that.

Fan voting for the allstar game

I'm not sure why supporters of Jeremy Lin would vote for him for the allstar game unless he was a truly legitimate contender. It just gives others the opportunity to point out his supposed shortcomings. And, of course, when confronted by the media Lin, unfailingly realistic, will admit that he shouldn't be voted in.

I think there were arguments about this last year when Lin got a lot of votes. As mentioned it's a popularity contest for the first cut. If the NBA want it to just be for legit contenders, then they shouldn't have the fans voting. He was coming off from Linsanity, so he was still very popular. As I said he probably will lose votes due to how he played last season and some others who didn't get a lot of votes last year will probably get more more votes this year due to how they played last year. Harden and Curry for example since they had good seasons last year.

Way to just spill out your opinion and completely ignore my other post:
There is a reason you are very much prone to miss readings.

I don't know anything? Everything I said? Quit this gross exaggeration please. I don't know everything of course and sometimes I was busy and not constantly reading the news. I actually stopped watching/posting/reading basketball for several years because I was too busy. Yes you know everything about my life based on your petty bias.
    Correct? What specifically?
    or
    ?
Incorrect? You are the one who is spilling accusations based on your hate/bias.
    OK, all good, history.
That's up to his judgement. If it was so obvious why did he have to make the apology above? Because he felt like it?

If his aim was to build a championship team and what he had clearly wasn't one, then he should definitely have gone for talent/upside rather than position of need. Otherwise it's the reverse.
Stop harping on this hindsight idea. I'm not bragging or anything. FOs are subject to judgements based on their talent evaluation. You are the one who is trying to instigate this nonsense.

You did not even read any of what I said, and you are still arguing with the benefit of hindsight.

If you think Jeremy Lin's upside was so obvious to the world that you think it was worth ignoring the massive hole at the 4 and 5, who are manned by Thabeet, Scola and Jordan Hill, then I won't be bothered with this argument.

You've gotta realize that you always run into reading-comprehension problems and it's not the fault of others. I think the detailed quoting way of my posting should tell you that I have read what you said. Well, it's good though, that your tone is more civil than the big haters.
I'm not arguing with anyone. Morey already apologized. Taking Bowie ahead of MJ, Darko over many were bad, there's no arguing with the benefit of hindsight.

Again, first of all, I don't think Dalembert is the only option. Second, I don't think waiving Lin was the only option. Third, I don't think need over upside is necessarily the right call at that time.

    PS.
"To the world" is moot, they are the professionals, it's their job to evaluate talent and upside at the highest level.

Morey's apology doesn't mean anything. Did the decision turn out to be worse for the team? Sure. Did Morey make the right decision at the time? Absolutely.

Just because Morey's decision did not pan out, doesn't mean the reasoning for his decision isn't correct. You know why? Because *gasp* hindsight is 20/20.

Please provide the available options, instead of just saying what Morey shouldn't have done.

Only haters hate it when their home teams' players make the All-Star game. The hate on Yao back in the day here was almost funny. Lots here were suddenly big Shaq fans who cared ever so much for the dignity and integrity of an exhibition and popularity contest.

btw - I always just vote for every Rocket anyways. I guess there are those that would find that offensive.

The Rockets knew Lin could play but the problem was at the time, we already had two proven pg's and Fynn was a recent 6th overall pick. Regardless if you think he has potential or not, you're not going to lose much sleep cutting your 4th pg. Obviously Lin proved everyone wrong and he's back with us as a starting player on a contending team, everyone wins, time to move on, folks lol.

Outside of his 1st allstar game, Yao deserved everyone of his games. He was the best and most dominante player at his position and probaly the best big man in the NBA!. Now comparing his situation with Lin who is not even close to being a top 5 player at his own position is a little out there!
