Are you sure about that? I'd heard he had that problem licked.

OP- Come on. You are just asking for the idiots and at-home stand-up comedians to come out of the woodwork to comment on this one with gay jokes they've been dieing to let loose.

Honestly though.... its been years since I've seen either of the Collin's brothers make a valid contribution to the league. I think it was great that he had the guts to come out publicly, but he did it pretty much after he was done anyways. Nobody was counting on Jason Collins to contribute to an NBA team this year.

Camby is the best they are going to get at the price he is commanding. Its best just to wait it out the first few weeks of the season even if it cost the Rockets someone like Corey Brewer or Aaron Brooks in the cuts. Its only Plantar Faciitis right now, and he should be good to go if treated right when it matters.... which is in February through June.

If for some crazy reason Camby retires then we can start conjuring up all the old vet big men the Rockets could sign... right now its not something we should waste out time on..... unless we just want to make stupid gay jokes.

Camby has a torn plantar fascia. At his age, I don't consider him much of an insurance policy, Dobro. I was of course expecting gay jokes. I simply didn't know if "No, he's gay" was a joke or not.

Clearly, some of the serious posters really don't want him precisely because he's gay and out. They think it would be a distraction. There's a legitimate argument to make from that standpoint. I haven't tried to attack them, or the others who made jokes. The conversation sure raised people's hackles though, and I got called "a troll" and "worse than a single player only fan"--I think unfairly. No biggie though.

But yes I think Collins would provide insurance and a better bargaining position if we decided to deal Asik. And, yes, hiring the first openly gay major sport athlete would make be prouder to be a Rockets fan, just as, if I were a Dodger's fan, I would be proud of their history.

I think it's funny how once he came out, everyone just forgot that he's not really worth a crap on the court anymore. He was once decent, but not anymore.

Besides, we still have Asik and Smith. Losing Camby wouldn't be a big deal at all.

Yeah he isn't worth a look. He was nothing more than a good post defender.

The only way this happens is if both Howard and Asik are out for a significant period of time. Even then, both Smith and D-Mo have spent time at center, so they would probably get the first look and the bulk of the minutes.

It is probably worth mentioning that the season would probably be over at that point as well, because without Howard or Asik the Rockets are not going to make the playoffs in the West.

Collins will probably be signed by a team during the season as a backup center when players start getting injured.

Smith and especially D-Mo have not proven they are good positional defensive centers yet. (Though I do think that D-Mo has looked improved on that score this year.) Again, I think that Collins, like Camby, would be signed as insurance and to give us a better bargaining position if we started to talk to other teams about dealing Asik.

I don't think we would sign anybody. Yes we signed Camby for insurance, but we also signed him because we know he is trustworthy and is at the point of his career where he would embrace such a role. To have someone as talented as Camby in that role is a plus. Collins is nowhere near that talented. Signing him for such a role would not benefit us at all. If the situation came up where we needed a fill in, I'm sure Morey and accompany would assess the situation and available players and go from there.

He's actually not an NBA player. He was an NBA player. That is the main point. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Jason Kidd and Doc Rivers and many others think he still is an NBA player. Quite honestly, you seem to be the one whose panties are in a bunch. Why does this discussion make you so angry? Do you have unresolved issues with you own sexuality or something? Just asking.

So sad how ESPN and probably others are making a big deal out of this just because's a homosexual. Talk about making a deal over nothing, he's not a good player, end of story. This is exactly why people stay 'in the closet', because they try to put the spotlight on them and make it bigger than it actually is. Sure he's the first one to come out, but that doesn't mean no team wants him because of it. I would not want him on the Rockets because he's not that good, nothing more, nothing less.

Don't care about him being gay, I just think dude is a punk based off a few of his last NBA stops and how he played.

It would be like getting a less talented Kendrick Perkins or signing Joel Anthony.

surprised he hasn't been signed yet

Any owner that signs him would be showered with praise from the media, and people with all the money they need often crave that kind of attention.

Collins is just not a good NBA player any more. He's good for playing decent 1-on-1 paint defense and giving 6 fouls and that's about it. And he's really atrocious on offense. Remember Kendrick Perkins in the playoffs? Collins is that bad, maybe worse. At this point, Collins is what the stats people call a "replacement level player"-- about at the level of any other random free agent you can find off the street (well, not literally off the street, most likely off a D-League roster).

So, if the Rockets are to lose Camby for the entire season, they are better off just having Greg Smith play the minutes that Camby would have played than giving them to Collins. They should probably use Camby's roster spot to either keep one more of the other guys fighting for the last roster spot (Brewer, Williams, Covington, etc.) or pick up on some younger prospect who have a higher upside-- a Greg Smith, Chuck Hayes or Patrick Beverley type free agent signing. I know the team is in win-now mode, but it's not like Collins was gonna get minutes anyway.

It's always about sexual identity with you people. Sorry I don't want a bum on the team just because he's a homo ambassador. I hope this common sense approach doesn't rain on your pride parade.

If you were a veteran center, would you want to get hurt during preseason or postseason?

Selective injury. Smart. I like it. Veteran move. See ya during hero hour.

Collins even in his prime was mediocre, I think he's averaged 6 rbs per 36 in his career.

I see his name floated around on the sports pages hinting at the reason no team has picked him up is because of the fact that he came out and admitted he was gay.

Hate to tell him that the reason no team has come calling is because he's 30+ with marginal talent.
