I finally finished The Wire after 2 years since the pacing is deliberate and slow with the setup, but it's a great show in that you learn something real and nothing is wasted. Even Season 2 carries meaning if you're to watch the show again because it takes the root causes outside Baltimore. It's more like a documentary to me, where a fictional series tells more truth about the world than any news or documentary has done before. That's something rare and sobering. Entertainment wise, I liked Breaking Bad a lot more, but The Wire is a piece of art on its own. Explains why the ratings were horrible.
Dramas, seinfeld doesn't count its the greatest comedy. Also, the rest of your list is complete horse****, I've been watching BB for over 3 years now and it is better than all the shows you mentioned. That much I can say, the fact that I consider it way better is my opinion though. The Sopranos had a really bad season (can't remember which one) and the Wire's last season was terrible. BB has had a good season everytime and got better....even when I didn't think it was possible to after season 4. It holds throne.
I love Breaking Bad. I will not rate it #1 all time just yet. Its too close to the end of it. For those here who haven't seen it......go watch Deadwood. Some of the best writing in television history (better than BB in this aspect) and casting that is perfection. I watched about half of season 1 of the Wire. I still own it, but haven't picked it up to finish in the 3 years since I put it down.
Complete horse...- come on, you're letting your BB obsession get the better of you. And this is coming from a person who traveled to ABQ and stayed in that rundown Crossroads Motel. It's at the top of my list, but The Wire is certainly a great show, the Twilight Zone and The X Files are up there, and so is The Sopranos, from the several episodes I've watched. And the most underrated show is The Rockford Files. This is where David Chase got his start, and the Anthony Boy character he created for 2 different Rockford Files episodes was the prototype for Tony Soprano.
The Wire is hands down the best piece of television that I have ever seen before or since. It is unsettling in its cruel depiction of reality and incessant condemnation of urban America (at least the fate that has befallen it). I think a lot of people go into The Wire expecting a heart-pounding, shoot-em-up, cops n' robber style show, when in actuality they get a thoughtful, incisive critique of post-industrial America. I can see how one could be disappointed if they were expecting something a bit more "entertainment-y", in line with a Breaking Bad or Sopranos theme. And as an aside, OP, the character you referred to in your post is Brother Mouzone. My personal favorite character has to be D'Angelo. Spoiler He meets a quick demise, but he is, in a weird way, the flagship character of the series (IMO). A conscionable guy born into a ****ed up system, who in the end decides to maintain the status quo for the sake of a higher-up, all the while getting screwed in the end. Doesn't get more "The Wire" than that.
oh I didn't mean the wire. The horse**** I was referring to was shows like Lost and Justified which don't come close, even though they were good. I don't have a problem with someone saying that The Wire or The Sopranos is better. I don't think so, but it wouldn't be a stretch for them to hold such an opinion.
You shut your w**** mouth. Justified has been consistently excellent since ditching the procedural format of S1 (S2 in particular stands up against any season of any recent cable drama), and might have the best dialogue of any show on TV. I'm willing to knock off a few points just because it was pretty ridiculous how Raylan would just shoot someone every week in the first season. I don't know why The Shield isn't more universally-recognized as being on the same level as The Wire or The Sopranos. The acting and writing were right up there, and it didn't have any noticeably weak seasons the way those two did, IMO.
BB season 5 > the Wire season 5 by a mile. Although i did enjoy the jimmy is drinking again storyline. <spoiler></spoiler>
Wire is my top show by far, and you summed up a big part of why. To me, it was as entertaining as any of the other dramas that I've seen, but then it's so much more than that. I've actually only seen the show the one time all the way through. Too epic for me to just start watching it so casually. Hard for me to pick a favorite character, but I saw Body as the flagship character. Most heart-wrenching is, of course, Spoiler Wallace.
The Wonder Years is the greatest show to me. The netflix version, maybe copyright issues but the theme song is completely different from the one I would watch in the 90s.
Not sure what you guys are bickering about but this was the best tv line-up in American Television History. Don't dispute me!!!! <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/i-EC-0zER8w?hl=en_US&version=3&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/i-EC-0zER8w?hl=en_US&version=3&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
This. I like the Wire a lot, but man, I got way too emotionally invested in to the Shield. Great characters, great writing, great ending. The Glen Close season alone. #teamstriketeam
i didn't finish watching breaking bad, i can only give so much of my life to television programming. however, my favorite scene from breaking bad was the opening of an episode in season one or two, i don't remember. he is with the chick he was a researcher with that married the other guy. they are in a room with ceiling window and they are writing a formula for the entire human body. she says something like yeah we have 98%, what is the other 2%. Walt looks up into the sunset and says "the soul".
The Wire is a top show for me, right up there with Sopranos and Rome. I was devastated when they didn't finish Rome. It was supposed to be 5 seasons and HBO only did 2 seasons due to cost. It's the one show I wish they would bring back and finish out the Rome story line including Egypt and Jesus/Christians.
was it only two? jesus time goes by fast. how many seasons of Deadwood were there. That was awesome from a historical standpoint also best HBO show: Larry Sanders. no i'm kidding but it was hilarious
