    Back after packing etc.

I am going to build my case through several replies.

I am going to make an assumption that super stars are somehow different than most NBA players. Therefore I will limit the population of the sample set to super stars. There are so few instances where a super star has changed teams in the last decade that I am assuredly introducing small data set error. But I would much rather face this error than attempt to rationalize why superstars are not different than the general population.

The data that most makes sense to use is the per game data. While we can certainly convert any other data set to per game data, I have chosen the more direct route.

We have here the 3 super stars that have changed teams in the last five years. I am sorry but I really do not view D-Will and Carmelo as super stars. Develop your own data set.

We also see a row for STDDEV. I assume I do not have to elaborate on the implications of this stat.

Could either of you two light weights build this?

    <script type='text/javascript' src='http://public.tableausoftware.com/javascripts/api/viz_v1.js'></script><div class='tableauPlaceholder' style='width: 768px; height: 950px;'><noscript><a href='#'><img alt=' ' src='http://public.tableausoftware.com/static/images/Ad/AdvancedStats/Graphs/1_rss.png' style='border: none' /></a></noscript><object class='tableauViz' width='768' height='950' style='display:none;'><param name='host_url' value='http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.tableausoftware.com%2F' /> <param name='site_root' value='' /><param name='name' value='AdvancedStats/Graphs' /><param name='tabs' value='yes' /><param name='toolbar' value='yes' /><param name='static_image' value='http://public.tableausoftware.com/static/images/Ad/AdvancedStats/Graphs/1.png' / > <param name='animate_transition' value='yes' /><param name='display_static_image' value='yes' /><param name='display_spinner' value='yes' /><param name='display_overlay' value='yes' /><param name='display_count' value='yes' /></object></div><div style='width:768px;height:22px;padding:0px 10px 0px 0px;color:black;font:normal 8pt verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif;'><div style='float:right; padding-right:8px;'><a href='http://www.tableausoftware.com/public/about-tableau-products?ref=http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/AdvancedStats/Graphs' target='_blank'>Learn About Tableau</a></div></div>

Please talk to your peers. Do not assume to instruct me. You cannot even begin to comprehend the level of knowledge needed to construct an app like that.

And I lump your sorry ass in with the other ignoramus idiots. Sorry, but you have shown zero understanding of the area of my expertise and the area that I post in. I may fall short of Morey, but you are not a grain of sand on my shoe. Statistical analysis and everything related to it is how the Rockets are run. Either get on the train or be left behind.

The ability to create an app and compile data does not uniquely qualify one to make judgments or valid interpretations of the data.

Scouting and projecting player value is an art as much as a science. Is the label 'superstar' only tied to offensive metrics? Stats still do a woeful job of representing defensive impact. And we're not even touching the surface of synergies with other players, or off-court impacts on the locker room or franchise appeal.

It's interesting that you bring a different position to the table by under-valuing Aldridge. But anyone with the level of enlightenment that you claim to have will understand why it's worthless to have such a high self-opinion.

You know what I like about people who are really really good at something? They never constantly tell people about it.

Well then, that's all i needed to know regarding the information presented in this thread.

There are some things worth creating statistical data sets for and there are some things that aren't. The fact that the OP created a complex "tool" to reflect the shots given to our mediocre Power Forward's is amusing.

I must admit the OP is an arrogant sourpuss but it seems his time is better spent with another endeavor.

And you have a right to your opinion. But I have a half a decade at a six figure salary that says that I can evaluate the trivial data that I present here. Plus the university degrees. And exactly what are your qualifications?

I doubt very seriously that Morey views any of this as an art. I really do not understand where you are coming from. We are not analyzing Michelangelo here. The data is concise and irrefutable.

And for a more elaborate discussion of LMA see:

You got to be kidding me. LMA would make us an instant contender this year. Morey tried to get him, and yet you are arguing he doesn't want him. How can you resolve that with the fact that Morey really wants LMA and would trade Asik for him?

Heh, the web app does little more than the graphing features of Excel. Looks nice but doesn't provide much useful info that you can't find on bball-reference,com kind of sites. If this makes you proud of yourself, good for you.

Congrats Carl. You have me contemplating leaving CF. But can I assume that was your purpose all along? Do you have the knowledge or understanding to critique a stats based post? I have not seen any indication of it. You completely fail to even exhibit the level of understanding that is evident in a person who has taken a stats 101 Junior college course. You are just throwing out posts designed to obfuscate the matter. You have managed to torpedo an unsophisticated attempt to demistify NBA stats for the average CF reader. Thanks to your bravado there are people who could not differentiate between a valid data set and an invalid data set flaming data that they are to lazy to evaluate. Or even critique a simple valid arithmetic approach, They have no idea what a right shifted normalized data set looks like or represents. They would not recognize STDDEV if it hit them right between the eyes. Just like you.

    Are you proud of yourself?

Great D and a jump shot? The player that quickly comes to mind is Udonis Haslem.
Strong championship experience and has played next to Shaq and Wade (sounds like Howard and Harden to me). He'd also be on a small contract.

He seems like the perfect fit when you consider the analysis in this thread. He is a Miami loyalist though.

    Who else is similar?

I know you understand the implications of the CBA. What are you willing to give up for a player who has good stats taking the worst shot in basketball?

So why would Morey give up Asik for LMA?

Do the Blazers need a center? Would the moderate improvement of Asik over their current centers be worth losing LMA? Do you believe that POR is going to give up LMA for anything less than Howard or Harden?

jtr, here's some friendly words of advice from someone who has been posting stats on here for a number of years. You may be an expert at statistical analysis (I know I'm not), but just let the analysis speak for itself. People will react more favorably towards it -- or at least more respectfully disagree with it -- if they're not made to think that you're talking down to them.

Even for LMA I doubt Morey would give up Asik...unless Twin Towers is a bust. Too many big egos in one kitchen, wouldn't work long term. Ha! we havent' even integrated Dwight into our system yet or worked the starting unit, and some here on Clutchfans are ready to make a major trade. Let's let things settle. Go fantasize somewhere else.

But he is talking down to them.

He has multiple degrees in statistical analysis and has made 6 figures for the last five years...

When he is not hanging out with his daughter he spends his time educating the CF masses on the "science" that is NBA analysis.
