... thus, the point of the mandate.

Doesn't change the fact that 1) they haven't paid in prior and 2) the fines are lower than premiums.

What an ignorant comment to make. You assume that people know when they will be getting sick! People can get cancer at any age. Ever visited a children's ward at a hospital. What is that kid suppose to do. In today's age high medical costs age. Medical insurance is a necessity. The rest of the industrialized nations have it, why should we lack behind. And before you go on talking about Canada and their issues, most of the European nations have it. No one said its perfect! But lot better than ours...

You don't know when you are getting sick, that's why you pay insurance when you are healthy...to INSURE that when you do get sick, you are covered.

So, you're saying there should be a mandate to get insurance?

Not at all, but when you get sick, you shouldn't expect someone else to foot the bill. Personal responsibility.

I'm honestly surprised that Republicans are willing to go so far for Obamacare. Is it really that important for them? I could understand it a couple of years ago to get Obama out of office. But this is his 2nd term, and they should be looking towards 2016. Shouldn't they not be trying to do things that most Americans are against?

Thus, the reason for the mandate. Single payer would have ensured that everyone pays, but the GOP wouldn't let that happen.

They're trying to rile up their base for the '14 midterms.

Most Americans ARE against Obamacare. Well, at least more are against than for it (50/36). They aren't in favor of a government shut down to do so, but I think that's mostly on the fact that they think it is an actual government SHUTDOWN, which it is not.

It's a shut down on non-essential services. It does not threaten our debt standing as we continue to make those payments, and it does not put us at risk for default.

So you think Americans believe things like the FDA that checks to make sure their food is safe to eat is not essential to their well-being?

    What is this, China?

Half of the FDA is on furlough. Not the entire department.

About 800,000 federal employees have been sent home. Analysts say the shutdown means a reduction in collective American income of about $200 million per day.

Advocates warned that domestic violence shelters in Montana and Vermont were no longer being reimbursed for their services, and said some shelters could be forced to close altogether. Scientific research across the country — into a type of meningitis in Hawaii; of water quality in Tarpon Bay, Fla. — came to a halt because scientists could not get into their own labs.

According to organizers, at least 23 local programs in 11 states are now without funding. In Calhoun County, Ala., where a quarter of the residents younger than 18 live below the poverty line, hundreds of poor children were told that their preschools were closed. In tiny Hobson City, volunteers scrambled to take in children at a church instead.

About 70% of the 86,000 civilians employed at the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies have been furloughed, officials said in Washington. "The intelligence community's ability to identify threats and provide information for a broad set of national security decisions will be diminished for the duration," said Shawn Turner, a spokesman for the director of national intelligence

Wrong. It could be 2 things. One is overhyped and the other is DENIAL OF FACTS.

Ironic that you say that. If it's ACA, the whole world is going to end because it's Obamana's plan. But if it something catasthropic your party did.. "meh... it's ok".
