I loved his first two novels, The Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising, having lived through the Cold War since the 1950's. That kept me reading the next 2 or 3, but then he got a bit too political for me, and while I probably read most of the Jack Ryan novels, I didn't read his other stuff. He'll be missed.
