Huh? Corliss was named Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament on a team that won the championship....and then he won an NBA championship.

    Are you intoxicated?

Admit it...you just read his wiki page...right?

Can someone 'splain to SirCharlesFan how Corliss got his nickname? Or do us Rice Alum have to do it.

Surely Latrell Sprewell belongs on any list involving choking, right?

I remember people heckling him with that but where exactly is the origin of it?

There isn't one. It just goes with corliss, and for some reason people think that's clever.

I have no clue why he is in the title of a chokers thread.

Barkley called him that after the '95 Final Four. But it's pretty stupid to label him a choker considering what he did the year prior.

Wow...you guys take this pretty seriously.

Well, he choked against UCLA pretty badly. I think he had like one pt and zero FGs into the closing minutes when the game was out of reach.

Don't mind me guys. Us Owl fans like to laugh at the rest of the SWC when they failed miserably like Scoreless in the 1995 Finals.

    I didn't know Rice had fans. ;)

Seriously, some great players used to be called big chokers. Garnett and LeBron came to mind. Once they got a ring under their belt, the label lifted.

I tend to think that choke and clutch are kind of overrated. A lot of it has to do with luck. By that I mean all players play greatly and play poorly sometimes. When these performances coincide with important moments, they become "choke" or "clutch" which may or may not have anything to do with the ability of said players other than just luck or unluck. Sample sizes of clutch or choke moments are quite small compared to the larger picture of the total volumes of work.

Speaking of which, I wish Marcus Morris or Patrick Patterson turned out to be a Corliss Williamson type player ... though some posters thought I was setting the bar to low for those two.

    The basketball team used to.

Choking can definitely happen, though,,,like short-arming a shot. I know I've choked in tennis that way, too. You can also choke by letting someone get into your head, like Karla vs Rodman. Robinson vs Hakeem. Kareem vs nearly every HOF center.

haha...that's pretty funny. I guess I'm the only person on the internet who still used that nickname.

    Nick "The Brick" Anderson.

really though, ask 10 people what choke means and you'll get 20 different answers. i subscribe to the Malcom Gladwell school of thought ...

Panic, in this sense, is the opposite of choking. Choking is about thinking too much. Panic is about thinking too little. Choking is about loss of instinct. Panic is reversion to instinct. They may look the same, but they are worlds apart.

I could not disagree more. Sports is just as much mental as physical. Pressure can totally affect a player. Have you not noticed that when you play sports? I assume you have played sports?

Hey! You have to respect any university that consistently ranks in the top 20 in the US. Players for Rice have to have the intelligence to compete in the classroom. Rice is not UofF.

I don't disagree with you and heypartner on the mental aspect. And many of those choke jobs might indeed because of the mental weakness of those players.

I just think it is a bit overrated. There are players who both choked and were clutch at different times. That, to me, seems that it's just random fluctuations within the law of average.

LeBron James is a classic example of being both a choker and a clutch performer. One can argue the same about Dirk Nowitzki, even Kobe (although Kobe fans always forget his choke moments.) Some historical chokers might be able to chalk up some clutch performances to offset their choke-iness if given a larger sample size opportunity.
