I'm pretty sure I've heard this on Stand and Deliver??? As for the security in schools, there is already something like that for troubled teens that exist already. If you're talking about having more security in a public school for normal kids, well then we have a much bigger problem as a whole.
Not true. They are supposed to build a huge complex that will take affordable housing near Kuykendaul and Louetta. That will run the area down within the next 5 years
Unfortunately, all it takes is one person and opportunity, which can present itself in every school. One day it's a gun, today a knife, and tomorrow it's a pair of scissors in the classroom. I hate to say it, but teachers also need to share some responsibility for what happens. They are adults on locations, with some authority, and usually know these kids much better than anyone else there. too many of them are passive about reporting incidents and would much rather take the path of least resistance, which can mean letting bad kids do what they want. When this happens at a nice school people say it's because it can't be prevented, but when it happens at a bad school, it was preventable....
I just moved out of that area last November. It has really gone downhill in the last 7 years or so. The areas around Aldine Westfield stretching east towards 1960 are looking horrible. We bought new construction near there in 2003 and took a bath on the house when we sold it last year. Values there are horrible. Driving by SHS when school let out looked like Compton or east LA. Lots of low-income families have moved to the older neighborhoods with homes available in the 80k range. Just a bad place to raise a family. I know someone who used to teach there and she said that kids would wear "rags" of different colors representing the gang they ran with. Not surprised at all that the gang activity has gotten worse.
Usually the poorer a school the more crime it has. 44% of the school is economically disadvantage. http://www.greatschools.org/texas/spring/6463-Spring-High-School/?tab=demographics
Who should the parents of well-behaved kids blame? It's the district's responsibility to have a clue what's going on inside the schools and to create a safe environment.
Yep!!! Actually, some of those High school kids are parents. On a serious note, the area has gone down very quickly over the past couple of years and slowing creepy up now in the woodlands. I went to Westfield as well and graduated in 05, it was never that bad.You had the fights of course, but never killed anyone in school.
When I went to visit Dallas, I played ball in some hood ass apts and the people were nice. That was Rita time maybe it changed. This latest Austin trip the affordable apartments looked very ****ing safe. I was impressed. I old work at Walmart and be happy. Here mothafuggas will mug you. It's houston that's just ****ed up. Racism and segregation
Many come from inside 610, as people keep getting priced out. I stopped at the McDonalds at 1960 and 45 once and it was like a party in the parking lot. That area is ****. KB Home and section 8. Maybe those two are the same.
That's sad to see. My dad was on the school board for six years. He left partially because of the direction of the board and also because my younger brother graduated high school. He is always kind of sad when he talks about the district has gone downhill. I got a damn fine education from some great teachers there from 1987-1991.
That may be true, but my point is you can have one crazy person at a "bad" school or a "good" school. The school in the CT shooting was considered a good one and look what happened. Yes, bad schools have more petty issues, but the murders don't occur every week. At least not in Houston. A bad school can go years without a death and the day one happens, the school will be blamed immediately, as if it's just not trying to prevent them. I dont think any school is not trying to prevent a murder. Even corrupt administrators have nothing to gain from it. Unless they turn schools into heavily secured buildings, administrators can't really prevent a person hell bent on killing another person. The responsibility has to be shared by all adults involved. Teachers, parents, administrators, staff, etc., not just a principal or district sup.
