Yao "can" shoot but he rarely shot outside of 10-12 feet from the basket, especially back when Chuck played with him in Van Gundy's last season (Adelman had Yao take a few more 15-18 footers, IIRC). Yao was pretty much all dunks, layups, and short jump hooks and turnaround Js out of post-ups. He really wasn't being used as that much more of a floor-spacer than Dwight Howard is.

It wasn't ideal offensively but worked well enough. The team overall was about league average on offense but they were significantly better on offense with Yao and Hayes together and was elite on defense.

Hayes is a winner. Put him on the roster and I guarantee he finds a way into the rotation and makes McHale look like a genius.

Yup, pretty much. He was actually a plus on offense with Adelman though. Great ballhandler and passer at the PF. I'm not sure McHale would know how to use him properly...

Chuck is not getting any younger. You get him on the VERY CHEAP.

Hayes was replaced by Scolandry as soon as we got PFs that could shoot, as opposed to JHo was who couldn't shoot and couldn't do anything else. So obviously the Rockets has believed even in the Adelman days that floor spacing's necessary for a star center.

Personally I think Hayes can perform the same role he did for the 2009 team if we trade Asik. Which is as a situational backup C/PF. But I would start DMo or Jones over Hayes even if I believe they are inferior players.

Would love to have the chuck wagon back.
He can space the floor with elite level passing for a PF and he always rolls to the basket.

Can't believe people dog out Chuck. He went to Sacramento and got lost in the s###storm. Dude can D, pass, and board, and he outworks everyone.

Given the salary and roster, will we see him again here? Don't know, but Morey did not want to lose him.

The Chuck wagon has no place on this team. Sorry. He adds nothing to the current Rockets offense, and would certainly be less of a benefit to the Rockets defense than just playing Asik next to Howard. I think that the chance of Morey adding him to the roster is just this side of zero.

To be fair to the Sacramento ****storm, Chuck got out of shape before he arrived there (he signed after the lockout) and I don't think he ever really got back to "Contract Year" shape during his time there. Not exactly sure what kind of physical shape Chuck will get into if and when he returns to Houston, so I wouldn't want to pay too much for him even if I do want him. He is, however, only 30 years old, so it's not impossible for him to get back to near his physical peak for a few more years if he is really committed.

A couple of situations where I can envision Hayes returning to Houston:

    1. He gets bought out of his contract by Sacramento, then signs with the Rockets for the vet minimum (or maybe even the "room mid-level exception," though I wonder whether he'll command that much in the open market).

    2. Houston deals Asik somewhere (for likely a PF) and take Chuck's contract back as some sort of a multi-team package-deal.

Something like this for example would make the salaries work:

HOU to CHI: Asik, Jones (or pretty much any smallish contract)
CHI to HOU: Gibson, draft right to Mirotic
    SAC to HOU: Hayes

I'd play Chuck over DMo right now. No questions.

You know exactly what you're getting. There's no question of "team-first" attitude. Chuck knows his limitations, and he also knows how to play D. Dmo doesn't have any of those qualities yet.

I would bring him back as a big man assistant / player coach...but he would be a good coach imo

imagine our FT shooting if we had both Dwight and Chuck

not sure why we dont get Yao to teach them how to shoot FTs

Hayes came to Sacramento out of shape, and also had this heart problem, which screwed up his preparation for the new season. The dysfunctional Kings organization did the rest.

Still, he may have lost some of his strength and speed and may have more trouble to get into shape.

I think he's a good piece to have on the team, especially if you consider trading Asik for something like a Jason Thompson/Chuck Hayes package. Thompson can run the floor, is decent on offense and defense and has a reasonable contract. He can play both next to Howard and as his back-up.

Perhaps not a better deal for Houston talent-wise, but from a 'fit'-perspective, quite intriguing, IMO.

Good idea, uh? Sac gets (besides out of the contract) what?

El Toros swear Mirotic is the next big thing.

And Asik is happier backing up the Frenchman instead of the Dunkman?

Cringe... The basketball gods would wipe the floor with you, as your team gets pummeled into submission.
