I don't even need to factor in gas and car wear and tear. I just factor in high blood pressure medicine and cost to bail myself out of jail when I road rage on someone.
Luckily I live in Fort Worth, so I rarely use the tolls over in North Dallas - maybe 2-3 times a year. But this summer when we went to San Antonio, we took the new bypass around Austin and I was shocked when I got the bill in the mail for $16 for one-way.
$5.50 a day, Mon-Fri. $27.50 a week, +/-$110 a month. And that's only if my wife decides to not hop on the Beltway to and from work. We live in rural NE Harris county. I commute to Pasadena and she's commuting to Humble. She can take backroads to get to 1960, but I'm Hwy 90 to the Beltway every morning.
We live near the beltway in Missouri City and it doesn't look like tolls are going anywhere anytime soon. They just rebuilt the tolls by our house to make them ezTag only.
Tolls theoretically encourage people to live closer to work, but doesn't seem to be the case according to reality.
I always avoid tolls and use the extra time to listen to the radio or just relax by listening to music
I was spending around $2000/year on tolls just going to work, I think. I decided to avoid toll roads on the way to work, and now it takes twice as long and my mileage is probably a lot less, but dammit I'm not paying tolls!!!!!
you're paying that toll. just indirectly. might as well cough up the money to save time, gas, wear and tear on your communte.
