The year he was fired, he made more money than any previous year. But, it was mostly on the strength of his contract with Two and a Half Men. He made $9m on his little show and his tour after getting fired, on top of the $30.4 from the episodes he completed for about $40m altogether. But, he would have made around $45.6m if he had shut up and done his job. I suppose you could say his attention-whoring after the fact helped mitigate the damage by $9m, but I'd say it's the same character trait that cost him $15m that year in the first place.
So while Charlie Sheen got fired from Two and Half Men costing him about $15 Million he also got a few ad endorsements playing off of his bad boy image and also another show. Acting out doesn't really seemed to have hurt him.
great topic - as the saying goes - apparently not. but somehow that doesn't seem right. i see stuff in the news that makes me care more or less about certain companies/brands. reputation management is huge.
True things didn't work out too well for Sandusky. So there does appear to be certain lines that don't get crossed. That said Sandusky and Penn State weren't attention whoring rather trying to hide their activities. I guess I should've better defined what I meant by bad publicity.
Manti Teo seems to have taken a hit although his really poor performance during the BCS Championship seemed to do much more damage to his draft stock than fake girlfriend. Tiger Woods has won 5 tournaments this year and is dating Lindsey Vonn so things seem pretty good for him.
Dixie Chicks, they hung around for awhile but after 22 million albums sold before the "problem" they won a couple of awards and sold 6 millions more albums before giving up. They did not benefit from their bad publicity.
Are we talking about companies or people ? Celebrities have entire teams of people whose job it is to tweak and repair their image. It's a lot harder to do damage control on a public-owned corporation. When a couple hundred Chevy's burst into flames on the highway ... it's gonna hurt their bottom line for a while.
Is appropriate consequence of bad publicity for the people to be stripped of everything then poor and destitute out on the streets struggling ? Its perhaps better now that people dont get as blackballed, typecasted and narrowly judged like in decades past. (Zealous "religious right" that example of too much moral high horse) Though I think now its like you said in the "n word" thread about how people are being LAZY with language. Its just general LAZY now with trying to uphold and define a baseline of values. I think its bit ignorant to think that people in public eye "getting away with it" DOESNT influence people. It can make you think WHATS THE POINT even of trying to maintain integrity when everyone wants to be given the same exemptions from expectations
He made net $6m less than he would have. And, to avoid losing the other $9m, he had to work harder (touring) than he would have had to in making 8 more 22-minute shows. If it was worth it, it's because his reward was in the attention-whoring itself and his freedom from the requirements of his bosses, because it wasn't his bank account that was rewarded. (And sorry, I meant to link the article I referenced yesterday, but I forgot and now I don't want to find it again.)
Just playing devils advocate here... If he was fired from the show silently, meaning nobody knew the reason for his termination, would he have made up any of that money at all?
Manti Teo Riley Cooper Bob Filner Johnny 30 minutes Aaron Hernandez Anthony Weiner Orenthal Charlie Sheen Todd Bridges Ryan Leaf. Chad Johnson
I wonder how Manti Teo would answer this question? I wonder how the guy who "catfished" him would answer this question? I guess it always depends on the bad publicity and how the person affected by it feels about that.
Charlie Sheen also will never get another show on the major networks and many people in the industry refuse to work with him which further limits his movie options. Sheen is very bright, so he has maximized the positive fame from the fall out, but it is at best a wash. Mel Gibson really hurt his career, as did Michael Jackson after the sexual suits.... I think it depends on what kind of attention you get... I don't think the attention is going to hurt Miley Cyrus.
