I watched a biography om him which ended in very interesting fashion. It pointed out that he is, according to most polls, the most respected and universally popular celebrity working at the moment in America. It also pointed out that the characterisitics the commin Joe assoscites with him are class, intelligence, honesty, and humility. And the show closed off by having several friends of his allude to the fact that Hanks is one of those rare individuals who is never satisfied, always looking for new challenges, and is also profoundly a believer in maiking a difference. Then many of them...as the last thing they said...mentioned that Hanks has been talking about " a big move" soon, but it was all very hush hush. They just kept saying that he is about to really surprise people, and it's in an important way...and then discussed his 'leadership' and 'vision of the future'...and then Spielberg , who was the last to talk, said that he didn't want to give anything away...becuase it was something very serious to Hanks, who is a very serious person...but said that " People don't realize how much Tom really cares about this country and the world...How profoundly involved and interested he is on many levels..." and then hinted at The Big Move coming soon...and then said " I myself...and I know many, many people who agree with me, feel that Tom Hanks would make an incredible President of the United States." End of bio....Interesting? i agree with all the character traits, and I agree that he has the kind of image and profile that would get him tons of votes as is...but does anyone here know what his political stances are on things? Can we assume that there would be a few stepping stones on the road to running for the Big Job, or will this be yet another step up in the celeb to politician trend. I am not dismissing Hanks...from what i know, exclusively chracter and intelligence, I would probably vote ofor him if those were the only issues. but as they're not, I was wndering what, if anything, people in here knew about him politically? Affiliations? Leaning? Stances? I have heards him called 'modderate' before...but compared with what? Just wanted to open a discussion because with the height f profile, virtually unparalled level of respect/affection he generates, and the constant praise those who know him give hi, many of them very, very powerful, i think it would ne premature to dismiss him as a potential serious candidate down the road.
I actually think a candidate that has NEVER been in politics is more appealing to me. At least they are coming in with a fresh viewpoint. DD
I like Tom Hanks as an actor, but to jump in with no political experience... He should at least do the Reagan route and be a Gov or at least be in the Senate... If this is true, he'll have the financial backing, and I would rather see him than Kerry...
I've always said that Al Gore has less charisma than a volleyball, which would make "Wilson" a damn fine candidate to be Hanks' running mate. Oh the horror of the media headlines too. "Sleepless in Washington?" ... "Hanks Makes SPLASH, Thinks BIG" ... "Forrest Gump To Run" ...
I think Tom Hanks has too many skeletons in his closet to run for president. Anyone seen The Money Pit for example? You can't be president with that huge hunk o' crap on your resume.
Tom Hanks would go into Washington with no political baggage. But there is one thing to consider. This guy has been so successful in Hollywood for so long that he doesn't really live in the real world anymore. Even the wealthiest of the wealthy in business do not have people clammoring to do everything for them (or give them sex) just to be able to say that they spent time with (insert celebrity here). It would be extremely difficult for him to understand the needs of rank and file Americans.
...unlike, say, George W. Bush or JFK? At least Hanks has seen poverty and middle income in his life, unlike many of our past presidents... And from what I hear one of the things most admired about him in his field is that he, unlike most celebs, keeps his private life very private, and very down to earth...doesn't go for the Hollywood night life, but lives, from what I know, on a farm , and is very non-=pretentious.
Money Pit and Joe vs the Volcano?? Anyone remember Busom Buddies where he spent 90% of the time in drag? Or that Happy Days episode where he challenged Fonzie to a fight?
I think he would have a difficult time beating out Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin for the nomination.
John Cusack? Stardumb: John Cusack John Cusack goes hard on Bush and soft on Hitler, before praising the cinema of Osama bin Laden. by David Skinner 02/14/2003 12:00:00 AM ...TODAY'S FEATURED STARDUMMY, John Cusack, has also been caught yearning for proof of his own significance. The sadness of it is that a talented and deeply likable actor has now made a baffling spectacle of himself. Half the problem is that Cusack currently plays the title role in a Weimar fantasy flick called "Max" which is outstanding for its unwitting wrong-headedness. The film's unfortunate mix of anachronism, historical romanticizing, and out-and-out crappiness makes it the accidental soulmate of "Springtime for Hitler," the intentionally bad play-within-a-play in "The Producers." The other half of Cusack's problem is that, while doing publicity for his bizarre movie, he has been mouthing off about George Bush, calling the president a kitschy warmonger devoid of moral purpose. Thus has the endearing star of such movies as "Say Anything" and "The Grifters" placed himself in the curious position of trying to humanize Adolf Hitler even while trying to Hitlerize Bush... http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/002/240rfmhc.asp And Alec Baldwin? Isn't he moving to France? Jeez, MacBeth, who do you want to be his running mate? Martin Sheen? Or would you go for the female vote and pick Susan Sarandon?
You have GOT to be kidding. I mean, I don't even know what to do with this. If this is an issue to you at all, NEVER vote for another Bush. I am amazed you would leave yourself open like this.
Unfortunately, that was his evil alter ego, Hollywood Hogan that was going to run. The Hulkster could easily get in with his current gimmick, but it would just be a swerve as he'd immediately turn heel and tell the American people to stick it.
