I'm a lifelong rockets fan, born in Houston, but I know about supporting clubs in other countries, as I am a massive liverpool football club supporter.... All I can say is that we welcome you with open arms, and that we're glad to have you in the state if Texas.. I'm from a family full of aggies, and think you've chosen a great school. And once you graduate, Houston is a great city to live in... Sure. It would be nice to live in nyc or sf, but with our advantage in terms of cost of living, a person making a decent salary van actually save some money!
That is a really cool story. Hey, BTW, I have always wanted to ask this to someone from Sweden — Once you get into IKEA, how the hell do you find your way out???

Hah, that's cool. It's interesting to see how random people from random places in the world end up supporting teams that have seemingly nothing to do with them whatsoever. I have a similar story. I'm from Greece and I became a Rockets fan after seeing Hakeem on a cereal box 15-20 years ago. It took me a while to get to know the team because I was really young, but now, here I am. When I was 10 I played basketball for a random kid team and my coach used to call me white Pippen. Then the coach quit the team and Pippen became Quitten around the same time. Meh.
Here's one from Turkey. Actually there are lots of us. And it is nothing to do with Omer Asik. We have been supporting the team for years. We even used to have a forum like this one. Now we are on Facebook. Cheers mates!
Great read! Welcome to the greatest fan base on earth! Please excuse the player loyal fans. It's all about this TEAM! Go Rox!
Born and raised Houston boy here and lifelong Rockets fan. I knew Hakeem was awesome but still hard to fathom he is so universal. Welcome to Texas.
Well, I played against and with a couple of really good players. For some reason Sweden has had pretty good international basketball players in the last few years. The former Rocket player Maciej Lampe was actually raised in Sweden and he played here 'til he left Sweden for Spain. He never actually played any basketball in Poland but his parents are from there so he decided to play for them instead. Former NBA player Damir Markota was also raised in Sweden before he turned pro. Both of them were obviously scrubs but it ain't bad for a country like Sweden. And a funny story for fellow Rocket fans, when I played in div 2 in Sweden against Jerebko's team I had a pretty nice putback dunk. Jerebko was close as well and I wanted to posterize him so bad but he was a little bit too far away so I got this stupid idea while I was hanging on the rim that it still would look natural if I would swing a little towards him and I accidentally knee'd him in the face and I got a technical foul for it but no one thought I did it on purpose, haha. I felt like a jerk afterwards but it was still a dunk "on" a NBA player.. Jerebko absolutely killed it in that game, I think he put up like 38 points or something and he had at least 5 dunks and I ran away from one of them, didn't want to get dunked on, haha. Good times!
