In case anybody remembers, I am the guy that argued after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster that the astronauts that died in that tragedy were not heroes. I was acting stupid and would not let the argument go. I think that there has been a lot of bad news in the last couple of years, and when that tragedy occurred, I dealt with it in a very cynical manner, not really wanting to feel anything about it. I felt that some of the media was throwing the word "hero" out without thinking about it, like they were just reading it off of a prompter or something. Anyway, I want to apologize because, no matter what I thought about it, I was being disrespectful to the memory of those astronauts, their families, as well as everybody here that was dealing with their own feelings about the tragedy. Clutch banned me for awhile after that, and although I was upset about it at the time, now I think he did the right thing. I just wanted to say that because I like this forum a lot, there are a lot of cool people here, and I now realize how stupid I was when I first started posting here. :)

It takes a big person to not only admit they messed up but also to apologize. I can't speak for anyone else here, but I respect you for doing so.

Do I remember?...you could say that.

If you are big enough to admit it was dumb to be that way abou tit, I'm big enough not to hold a grudge.

Kudos for doing it publicly. :)

Thanks you guys. No matter how forceful and indeed overpoweringly perceptive my arguments might have been, my insensitivity and poor timing were inexcusable.

So, did you change your mind? :D

All astronauts are heros...get your facts straight next time.

No offense...but if you don't see an astronaut as a hero, then your definition of hero needs adjustment. It's not a hero to risk one's self for the pursuit of knowledge and progression of mankind in space? Their ability to courageously inherit those abnormally high risks and do their jobs makes them a hero all in itself...not to mention the honor and respect they exhibit while doing their jobs. They know the risks and, yet, they do it anyway. Same thing applies to soldiers.

These astronauts basically gave up their lives for their dreams. If that's not a hero, then I don't know what one is. I hope you changed your mind. I missed your original thread but I wouldn't have liked your opinion one bit. Apology accepted, however...if you changed your mind. ;)

Ditto. (not agreeing with your statement, rather saying if I had to apologize for every stupid thing...)

As tempting as it is, I am not even going to touch this one, as I have already ruffled enough feathers already on this issue.

I think that Cagey has the right to think that astronauts are not heroes. Not that he said that, although it almost seems like he is being baited to comment. I dont think he should have to.

I mean, the guy apologized for being insensitive, which I think is very big of him, but there's no need to force him to believe the popular line of thought. Jesus, so is so much groupthink being forced on America these days...why can't people disagree about something without being labeled unpatriotic or evil or stupid?

Heroes are personal. Some people consider their parents their heroes. Heroes can be cops or firemen or soldiers or others that lay their lives on the line to save others. Some consider teachers or ministers or social workers or school counsellors to be their heroes because they set them on paths that forged their lives. And some consider astronauts heroes.

I admire the hell out of astronauts because they worked their ass off to get where they are and they have balls of steel. I am insanely jealous of them because I would love to go to space. And I was crushed when the shuttles blew up. But I respect the right of any person (not just Americans) to come up with their own individual heroes, astronauts or not.

I think we've all been banned one way or another...

It takes courage to admit your wrong and apologize...

Ditto mateo. I think classifying something like "who is and is not a hero" as "fact" is way sketchier than any opinion, half-baked or otherwise. Water is wet, heat is hot, ice is cold, oj killed his wife, the barkley trade was horrible -- those are facts.

In my opinon, stuff like 'who is and who is not a hero' is not fact.
In my opinon, the apology was classy.
In my opinion, come to think of it, while my stomach sinks when I think about the Space Shuttle and it makes me sad and proud and so forth, I am not sure every astronaut ever meets my particular definition of "hero."

And in-my-opinion-bordering-on-fact, I am not so sure that my potentially-overly-discriminating-personal-definition of the word "hero" has caused anyone harm or "needs adjustment."

In fact, I could be wrong.
In fact, I could have missed some level of affection or irony in Surfguy's post.
In fact, my opinion about this War in Iraq -- that we are now reaping the bounties of innumerrable diplomatic failures which will ignite a century of sucidal terrorism against the US with fading sympathy and increased isolation from the rest of the planet -- could be wrong, too.
In fact, tolerating differing opinions is a fairly crucial price of living in a free society, even when every bone in our body tells us some other person is full of crap.

Whatever. my shorts are in a bunch about everything. no offense intended, Surfy, seriously. Carry on.

I wasn't involved in the original discussion and I certainly wasn't trying to label him. We just use different dictionaries is all. There was a bit of sarcasm to my post. I was also curious if his perception changed and it appears it hasn't. So, I consider it a fact and some of you don't. Big whoop! I happen to think certain traits exhibited by people make them heros and I believe astronauts and soldiers show these traits every damn day. A lot of people consider Michael Jordan a hero. That's when I have to laugh.

Ok, I am usually not this nitpicky but this has been bugging me for a LONG time... In your signature you have a quote from a Simpsons episode where Homer tries (unsuccessfully) to get a piece of mail he sent to Burns before he can read it.

    You have the quote as:

Mail recipient(Homer): Hello, my name is Mr. Boo-urns. I'm here for my mail.

    Mail clerk: First name?

    Mail recipient(Homer): Doh!

In reality this is what aired:

HOMER (attempting to impersonate Mr. Burns):Hello, my name is Mr. Burns. I believe you have a letter waiting for me.
POSTOFFICE GUY: okay, Mr. Burns - what's your first name?
    HOMER: I don't know.

I know, I know, it's a miniscule, nitpicky thing to point out, but trust me I feel better now... carry on.

CBFC, well said on the part about different people's perceptions.
I dont agree with your decision to not see the astronauts as heroes, but thats fine with me...You state it in a civil manner and are not insulting.
That was really cagey's only fault in the original thread..he was losing it and being insulting...I have no problerm with someone having a different opinion, just try to be civil in your discussion of said opinion.

I can't remember if I actually lost it and was insulting people, but maybe I felt ganged up on and was being defensive. I just reviewed the thread in question, and the entire argument was removed. I probably should have started a new thread, rather than invading that one. Thanks to all of you that have forgiven me, and for any of you that don't, I understand why.
