I googled this question and can't find. I'm rewatching and on season 2 and Frank Sobotka keeps talking about Pollocks .. What is that? and why does Valcheck want Sobotaka's head so bad? Thanks CF Brethren.
Polish people If I recall correctly Valcheck and Sobotka are competing for that mural space at the church for their respective groups.

This. The head of the police department has one made to have it put in a certain space in which the dock mural was already put up and they refused to have it taken down which started the whole thing. The one thing that was odd to me, were how many Polacks being dumb jokes they made. Never knew that was a thing. Had to look it up and was flooded with Polack jokes. Also researching how to spell Polack found that Polack is a derogatory term....hmmm. never knew. Next I'll find out calling Eskimos, Snow Mexicans is offensive. Or calling them Eskimos is offensive.
I know people say it's a lot better on rewatch but I have never rewatched any of the seasons so I wouldn't know. I didn't really enjoy season 2 that much. iMO 3>4>1>2>5
Polack is a derogatory term for a Polish person. Valcheck hates Sobotka b/c Sobotka took the window location at the church that Valcheck wanted.
Awww man I miss the Wire. Love Season 1-4. If not for Season 5 this might have been my favorite show of all time.
Polak is the Polish word for man. Polka is the word for woman. And yes, it morphed into an antiquated derogatory term, on same level as wop, spick, spook, dago, chink, hick, jap, kike, redneck, darkie, zip, guinea, kraut, raghead, guido, ******, heeb, coolie, nip, paki, wetback, coon, mick, etc....
I enjoyed this show, though not so much as to hail it the best ever. I agree that seasons 3 and 4 were the best. I especially enjoyed the political aspects of them. I also don't remember season 5 being the worst. Come to think of it, I don't even remember what S05 was about...
