i dunt think it has to do with if they can read or not. if you are driving in your country and seeing a group of foreign soldier poointing their machine guns and screming at you, thinking that they will shoot and kill you, will you stop? or step on that pedal and try to run for your life?
Well apparently stepping on teh gas pedal is teh wrong idea It is an unfortunate mistake but it happened. These folks should have stopped, but they didn't. The soldiers did what they had to do.
Uh, yeah? Well, cnsidering that even a very, very fast car cannot outrun a very, very slow bullet, I think that it's safe to say that that's not a very good judgment. Even those who find physics enormously challenging will get that one.
well people will stop if they think they are not going to die, but if the driver think the soldiers going to shoot at her/him anyway, then the driver will take the chance
And what is the driver thinking in that instance? The driver is driving towards the checkpoint. They can see it from 3/4 of a mile away (it is in the open desert). Do they A) turn around as soon as they see it, before they are within range of the soldiers' weapons, or (by your logic) B) continue towards the checkpoint and make a mad dash through it at the last minute, when they are certain to die because they have just driven within the range of the soldiers' weapons??? Do you not see how stupid this scenario is?
Thank you. There will be mistakes, but Saddam kills more people in half a day then the U.S. has accidently killed in this war. And no I'm not exaggerating, on average Saddam's regime over the last 20 to 30 years have killed 150 to 200 people A DAY! Oh, but the U.S. is a nazi killing nation going after "poor Saddam" huh Ilovethisgame?
1)i dunno what exactly the place around look like so i dunno how far of a distance the driver can see the check point 2)if the car drive too fast, cant stop, or seen the checkpoint with guns pointing at her/him n thought it was too late so he chose to run thru it. 3) think if he turnaround will be too slow, too suspicious or too late becuz the enemy will catch up and fire too.
I completely disagree. Call me crazy, but they were warned and had an easy chance to avoid their death. We have to protect our soldires first. Yes, the Iraqi civilian's lives mean something, but when their gonna put suicide bombers up against us, these check points are needed. These Iraqi's were A.) Suicide Bombers or B.) Too stupid to read the road signs. Stupidity should be painful, and in this case it was.
The soldiers were between a rock and a hard place. From what I have heard, the soldiers tried to get them to stop, fired into the air and then into the engine prior to the fatal shots. I have the benefit of hindsight...I wish they would have shot out the tires.
We may not have the right to do it...but it is certainly called for. If China was in Iraq instead of us (IF), and they were constantly under the threat of suicide bombers, and had already had some suicide bombings carried out, would you want them to check people's cars? Checking their cars is no where near what Sadaam has put them through.
You get the best moto, you may get in their way and stop them, or you may threaten them. I mean you should not fire, especially to children.
If you read above, they tried to stop them by test firing. Then they tried shooting out their motor. Their last chance was to shoot into the car.
Whats the US civilian kill number in Iraq up to now...(sorry) collateral damage? Hey you can keep track of it on a website that does just that. ***************** ***************** The B-2 bomber carries sixteen 2'000 lb. JDAM bombs. If all goes 100% as planned (the bomb does not fall outside of its specified margin of error of 13 meters, and the GPS guidance system is not foiled by a $50 radio jammer kit, easily purchased), then here is what one such bomb does: everyone within a 120 meter radius is killed; to be safe from serious shrapnel damage, a person must be at least 365 meters away; to be really safe from all effects of fragmentation, a person must be 1000 meters away, according to Admiral Stufflebeem. The B-2s will be used upon targets within Baghdad. -Prof Marc W. Herold, IBC Project Consultant More on the JDAM Mark-84 iraqbodycount dot net
Threaten them? They put warning shots in the air and then into the vehicle's engine. Was that not enough? Also, when our troops were firing, they did not know that their were children inside. They couldnt see who was inside because the van wouldnt stop. Bottom line: They didnt what they had to do.
I would probably either put it in reverse and turn around or come out with my hands up and try to communicate. However, when I see guys with machine guns asking me to stop, I stop. Geez. We're there passing out food and water to the Iraqi people. we're not there to kill civilians. On another note, why not shoot the tires?
It was a checkpoint in the middle of the friggen desert. They must have seen it at the very least a half mile away. Oh, so now the brakes went out??? Yes, if your brakes go out and you're barrelling towards a checkpoint a half mile away, just keep going straight until you're in range of the soldiers' weapons... And then keep going straight some more. Don't *even* think about rolling off the road anywhere before you reach the point of no return... Enemy? What enemy are you talking about? Were Saddam's goons chasing them? Or were the US soldiers supposed to chase them and gun them down? What in the hell are you talking about? Hey *glynch*! Why don't you check in with the Red Cross to get a picture of what the Iraqi civilian casualties have been like? They visited Baghdad area hospitals a few days ago and were only able to find 3 civilian dead city-wide due to the bombings. Since then the Iraqi regime has systematically denied them full access to area hospitals, no explanation given. Although I suspect that it's because there isn't enough "collateral damage" to make it look good for them. BTW, your buddy Herold needs to give the specs on the guidance system for the JDAM and JSOW to give an accurate picture of that particular issue. The JDAM hits what it's aiming at - there are no stray bombs - which is why the Iraqis have felt the need to fabricate errant "allied" missile strikes: http://washingtontimes.com/op-ed/20030331-28319822.htm
As for why you don't shoot the tires: the tires do not flick the switch that triggers the bomb in the car. The people inside do that. You shoot out tires when people are trying to drive away from you and you don't want them to, not when they're coming towards you and you don't want them to. Shooting out tires will only slow them down at any rate. You can make the distance on 4 flat tires.
