    What if they can't read?

They need to adjust the checkpoints to a 2 tiered system....put up barriers in the front....and the back.......

This is a good point. Sadly, they need to alter how they do their check-points yet again. It's a tragedy that these things happen. When someone first said "war is hell", they weren't talking about the Rockets playing the Lakers. :(

    For comparision:

    Amnesty International Report: Iraq 2001

    Amnesty Internation Report: USA 2001

Hardly comparable. The USA is not whiter-than-white, but the Iraqi report makes for some grim reading.

A one year comparison is foolish, look back over 10, 20...etc. years. Check other reliable sources for the past 50/100 years- if you can handle what the US has done. Whats the US civilian kill number in Iraq up to now...(sorry) collateral damage?

and people can u imagine this , if the driver see lot of foreign soldiers with machine guns pointing at her car doing all kind of handsigns ,screaming. she may think the soldiers want to fire at her ,so she may take a chance and try to run thru it

luvthisgame, don't politicize everything. We have a situation with a van full of women and children driving to a check point with armed enemy soldiers fighting a war. Regardless of whether the van should be there or the soliders should be there, the driver has a decision to make. Does she continue driving when all indications would show that this course of action will result in her death and the deaths of her compatriots in the van? Or does she stop and risk whatever it is these enemy soldiers might or might not do to them or whatever other repercussions may result? They might not know what those soldiers would do, but it can't be much worse than killing them all. If I was a betting man, I'd stop. To do otherwise brings judgement onto your own head regardless of the actions of others. It is beyond foolhardy to drive toward enemy soldiers who have given every indication they will shoot you if you proceed.

    Can't read?

Do you need to be able to read to know what warning shots mean? How about when the warning shots start plowing into your van's engine block? When you're surrounded by soldiers, see what are obvious roadblocks and stop signs, hear people yelling something (doesn't matter what language), hear gunshots, and then see sparks accompanied by 'pings' flying off the hood of your car, you should get the message.

This is a tragedy, but almost to be expected considering the tactics the Iraqis have recently begun resorting to. It will probably happen again, too (if there are any more r****ded/deaf/blind drivers left in Iraq after this).

 OK. I have been a paid-up member of Amnesty International since my first year at university (nine years ago). I couldn't quickly find an online report over a longer period of time.

I can "handle" what the US has done: I'm not American. Any comparison of Saddam Hussein's government to that of the United States reduces your credibility - significantly.

I completely regret all fatalities on both sides. I have not stated my position on this war on the BBS.

I do not, however, believe that any financial benefits that may be derived would be greater than the cost of prosecuting this war to the US. For right or wrong, I believe that the coalition are waging this war for the "right" reasons, not for economic gain.

This was a horrible mistake, and I am not going to participate in politicizing the deaths of women and children.

Our soldiers obeyed orders in this act. I hope we take measures that will keep this from occurring again.

RIP to all innocents lost in this righteous war.

I am out of this sickening thread.

Leaving aside your idiotic comparison between the regime of Saddam Hussein and the government of the US...

Still hasn't hit the 100 mark. Not even close yet... Why do you ask?

The "civilians killed by Iraqi regime" number is probably higher than ours so far...

It is very sad, and yes, they should have stopped.

It does not change the main objective, it should only harden the resolve.

Iraq is in for a big change, and they don't even know how good that change will be.....but once they have it, there will be no going back.

Why is it so immpossible for the US to do something wrong? The vast majority of our actions are positive (btw-"killing nazi" classy response), but we do make major mistakes. Don't forget we are fighting to "liberate" Iraq to give them the chance to live in a society that allows the freedom of speech.

Who here said the US never does anything wrong? To my recollection no one here has ever - ever - said that. So, what are you talking about?

Does patriotism annoy you? Or is just that you'd like to see more of us pissing on our country's name?

Could this have been a suicide driver purposely loading a van full of women and children, per Sadams orders, knowing full well the headlines/ world reaction this would bring?

    Very sickening.

If you can't read, how can you get a liscense? Don't you have to be able to read the road signs to drive? Or do they have road signs?

Actually, that thought had occurred to me. A Fedayeen in the van with a gun to the driver's head... But I would think that they'd probably recognize his body. They are almost all men.
